Nurse Your Nails Back to Health with Nailtiques

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

Nails can make or break a look. A set of freshly painted nails can easily top off a perfect fashion ensemble—just as a set of chipped, brittle and discolored ones can easily ruin it. But more than just a fashion accessory, did you know that your nails also reflect the general state of your health? This is why it is absolutely necessary to take your nail health seriously.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably tried just about every nail art design this summer. And just like my nails, yours are probably just as in dire need of nourishment. Remember, just like our skin, our nails also dry out, peel, break or become infected—especially when they are frequently exposed to harsh chemicals. If you find yourself in this situation, you may want to try Nailtiques Nail Moisturizer and Formula Kit to save yourself an expensive trip to your nail salon.

Nailtiques offers a therapeutic line of conditioning protein-based nail enhancers that are formulated to keep nails strong and healthy. The good thing about this kit is that it includes four of Nailtiques most popular products: the Nail Moisturizer, Cuticle and Skin Gel, Nail Protein Formula 2 and Oil Therapy.

Nail Moisturizer – Formulated with jojoba, aloe and soluble collagen, this non-greasy nail cream nourishes, conditions and moisturizes the nails. It also promotes nail flexibility. Use this if your nails break or split easily.

Cuticle and Skin Gel – This is a glycerin and aloe-based cream that’s designed to soften and smooth dry and cracked skin around the nails. To get the most out of this gel, apply this at bedtime, and put on a pair of cotton gloves. As a bonus, you can also use this on your elbows and knees!

Nail Protein Formula 2 – This protein-based healing formula is designed to treat nails that are soft, tender, peeling, or growth-resistant. If you want your nails to grow faster, this baby is a must!

Oil Therapy – This formula features a blend of natural, vitamin-rich oils that restores and seals in moisture to extremely dry and brittle nails, cuticles and skin. This can also serve as a drying agent to help set nail polish.

Telltale Signs of Plastic Surgery

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

By Jenna

A recent conversation between me and a co-worker prompted the question of: How can you tell if someone has had plastic surgery? Are there dead ringer signs of plastic surgery? I’m definitely convinced that going under the knife MUST lead to at least one scar or sign that you’ve been there. So out of all of the plastic surgery options available, we wanted to find the ones that are most noticeable and the ones you could virtually get away with. Aside from the bad plastic surgeries that have become notorious, (Ahem Cat Lady and Priscilla Presley) there are the ones that slide by unnoticed. Just when you thought your mother in law ‘looked different’ and thought her nose is actually shrinking, here are 5 ways to spot if someone has had plastic surgery.

  1. Bad Scars – It’s true that people heal differently and the same person with the same procedure may get worse scarring than the other. However, tummy tucks and breast lifts usually leave some pretty gnarly scars. Depending on your genetics, skin type and skill of the surgeon, a lot of plastic surgeries result in some scarring.  Oh and don’t forget, if you are a smoker it hinders your healing process can make scarring worse. Look for these at the waist line, under the armpit, in front of or behind the ears for facelifts or ear pinning’s and below the chin.
  2. New fat appears in different places. Hello liposuction! The myth about liposuction is that it will remove fat for good, so people flock to this procedure instead of hitting the gym or changing their lifestyle. The truth is that yes, if a plastic surgeon removes fat cells from your thighs, the cells aren’t reproduced in other areas of the body. However, if a person’s lifestyle stays unhealthy after getting lipo and gains 10 pounds, they’ll gain fat in a place they didn’t have fat before-it has to go somewhere. If Yolanda came in to work with a super flat stomach all of a sudden and 3 weeks later has gained chubber arms, there’s a good chance our friend lipo has been there.
  3. The ‘stink eye’ happens when you go to an inexperienced or distracted plastic surgeon for Botox. If a doctor injects into the wrong place in between or above your eyes, your eye tends to droop. Botox can cause the droopy eye or the Botox brow which unfortunately, both make you look a little angry. The good thing is that both of these are not permanent and should clear up in a few months.
  4. The trout pout is pretty common around southern California and if you can’t spot it you probably aren’t from ‘round these parts’. Usually, your bottom lip is about 50% larger than the upper one so most of the ladies out there with the fish lips have had silicone injections or a lip augmentation.
  5. Someone is filling out their jeans a lot better… and higher? Butt implants can totally make your booty beautiful, but sometimes the rest of the body just sags. Look for the butt that rides high all of a sudden, it takes a while for the implants to settle and drop naturally. While you can’t really see a scar unless you’re checking out their fanny close enough, this one can be a little more obvious than the rest.

Happy hunting friends! What signs have you seen?

Choosing the best anti aging products for your face can be a little challenging especially when you simply want to maintain youthful skin with an anti aging regimen without using tons of products to achieve great results. The 3-step skin regimen benefits your complexion with good-for-you ingredients to say bye-bye to the appearance of those unwanted fine lines or to prevent them in the first place. As an esthetician with sensitive and acne-prone skin, I can’t imagine overwhelming my face with too many products that can cause irritation or make me breakout. The anti-aging toner instantly refreshed my skin and removed leftover makeup and dirt while tightening my pores. The anti-aging treatment cream is my new miracle worker. I felt a difference as soon as I put it on my face and neck. My skin instantly absorbed it and did not leave a greasy finish. My face felt hydrated and soft. Cheers to Healthy Skin!

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

Have you ever heard of the phrase, “garbage in, garbage out?” It’s mostly used in the computer science world, but it’s also true for skin. As an outside indicator of good health, our skin shows not only if we’re eating a balanced, nutrient-rich diet and getting enough hydration, but also if we’re taking in too much garbage or poison—like alcohol. Allow me to elaborate.

Doctors and beauty experts agree that there’s a direct correlation between alcohol and skin aging. For one, alcohol increases the rate at which the body excretes water—and we all know what happens when our skin gets too dehydrated. Dehydrated skin ages more quickly, making it more prone to deep lines and wrinkles. Alcohol also causes blood vessels to dilate, producing flushed, coarse skin and worsening existing skin conditions like Rosacea. Finally, alcohol limits the absorption of nutrients vital for skin health like amino acids, minerals and vitamins.

While we can’t avoid occasional drinking with friends, there are other liquids that we can drink to counter the aging effects of alcohol. Here they are…the best drinks for healthy skin!

WATER
Drinking plenty of water rejuvenates skin cells. More than hydrating cells, it also helps cells get toxins out and essential nutrients in. Nutrition expert Liz Lipski also says that when the body is properly hydrated, it sweats more efficiently, keeping our pores clean and clear.

GREEN TEA
Green tea is rich in antioxidants that reduce inflammation and protect cell membranes. Because it’s said to be high in polyphenols, compounds that help eliminate cancer-causing free radicals and reactivate dying skin cells, some say it’s very effective in reducing the damage of sunburns and overexposure to ultraviolet light, which makes it a good prevention weapon against skin cancer!

RAW FOOD SMOOTHIES

Drinks made with blueberries and carrots don’t just taste amazing after an intensive workout; these are also one of the most nutritious drinks for the skin. Experts consider blueberries as the highest food source of antioxidants and phytochemicals, protecting the skin cells from damage and disintegration. It’s also an excellent source of soluble and insoluble fiber, vitamin C, manganese, vitamin E and riboflavin. Carrots, on the other hand, are an excellent source of vitamin A, which is a required nutrient for healthy skin. Carrots are also a superior source of fiber, biotin, vitamins K, C and B6, potassium and thiamine.

And since we’re talking about beauty drinks, I can’t help but mention Borba Clarifying Skin Balance Crystalline – Pomegranate. This fruity drink is not just perfectly refreshing during hot summer days. It also delivers all the essential nutrients to keep my skin well-hydrated, healthy, radiant and youthful-looking!

Off The Beaten Path with ARCONA’s Cranberry Toner

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

By Jenna

To me toners aren’t normally considered to be facial cleansers.  Generally you use your toner after you exfoliate and before you moisturize, but ARCONA’s Cranberry Toner is breaking down barriers. This product is a multi-active cleansing superstar and is suitable for any skin type. Thanks to an alluring shimmer in the bottle and a heavenly cranberry scent, you’ll be head over heels for ARCONA after using this fabulous product. Here’s why you should take a break from your generic routine and indulge a little off the beaten cleanser path.

This skin toner helps infuse skin with antioxidants that help leave skin smooth and protect from free radical damage. Don’t be shocked when you don’t find a spray pump with this one; it’s a cleanser, toner and moisturizer all in one convenient little bottle, so while helping to hydrate your skin it’s also clearing away unwanted dirt, makeup and debris from your pores. The first thing that I noticed upon using this facial toner was how great it smells. It has a very fruity, warm scent yet it’s light enough not to overpower your senses. It’s actually really refreshing to have a toning cleanser that doesn’t smell like a hospital bed.

ARCONA’s Cranberry Toner is slightly foaming and has a thicker consistency than a regular spray toner. After application, you’ll notice your skin smoother and definitely more moisturized than before. Coming from a cult favorite brand like ARCONA, you can put this product on a higher holistic scale than most. The line was created by a prolific woman who was both a chemist and a holistic skin care pioneer that has gained quite a following over twenty years. ARCONA caters to anyone who doesn’t want to go under the knife but wants plastic surgery worthy results with a motto that anyone of any age can and should have amazing looking skin.

Summer-Ready Feet

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

Summer is in full swing, the days are longer and the temperatures are perfect for wearing that cute pair of sandals and fun dress any time of day. Finally, it feels like I’m out of hibernation and get to show some bare skin! My beauty ritual during the summer tends to be a little different where I have to make sure my skin is always protected from the sun with a really good SPF lotion, and that my legs feel silky smooth all the time! Foot maintenance is also a must. Off course there’s also the occasional tanning at the beach to keep a nice golden glow.

The one thing I obsess over as soon as summer arrives is keeping my feet in tip-top-shape. I really make an effort to care for my feet just the way I would my face with great skin care products. For some, our feet can be a part of our body that we sometimes tend to neglect because we don’t want to show how our heels, nails or soles are not in the best condition. Caring for your feet anytime not just during summer can really benefit our overall foot health since this is what supports us when we are standing, walking or running. Here are a few tips to keep your feet happy and pretty!

  1. If your feet perspire throughout the day, spray on an anti-perspirant foot spray to keep them fresh and dry. This kind of spray works just like a deodorant but for your feet!
  2. If you have sore feet and they are tired and achy too, dip them in a foot bath and add some foot soak to soothe and revive them. A good foot soak formulated with tea tree oil contains antiseptic benefits and even stimulates circulation.
  3. Moisturize your feet to prevent dry heels. A good foot moisturizer with shea butter softens, revitalizes and even soothes irritation.
  4. Use a foot scrub in the shower to maintain smooth feet. Scrubs with mineral salts are great for softening rough callouses.
  5. Finally, a trip to the nail salon to pamper your feet and maintain your pedicure looking great is always fun!

Murad Hybrids: Skin Care Meets Makeup

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

When I think about Murad, the word “makeup” isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind.  I’d think “anti-aging” or “acne solution” or “comprehensive skin care regimen.” So when I heard about Murad’s Hybrid line, Murad’s ambitious attempt to combine skin care and makeup into one product, I was definitely curious.

The strength of Murad Hybrids lies in its ability to conceal imperfections and even skin tone while improving the skin’s health over time. That sounded too good to be true at first, but then I read so many rave reviews in several publications about two of its products—Skin Perfecting Primer Matte Finish and Eye Lift Perfector—so I decided to try them!

I’m very particular about using primer, not only because it acts as a barrier between my skin and the chemical compositions of my other makeup products, but also because of the slew of benefits it provides like balancing oil production, filling in lines and pores, evening out skin tone, and holding my makeup in place throughout the day. Sometimes, it’s all the makeup I use.

As a primer, Murad’s Skin Perfecting Primer – Matte Finish does its job so well! It’s refreshingly cool on my dry skin, hydrating it while delivering skin-nourishing ingredients that would eventually refine the texture of my skin and shrink my enlarged pores. When it dries up, I get a smooth and shine-free finish that’s ready for makeup. What’s more, this product comes in one, universal shade, so it takes the guesswork out of finding the right primer that matches your skin tone and type. And because it’s oil-free, it doesn’t clog my pores and cause breakouts.

Murad’s Eye Lift Perfector is another wonder product, and it perfectly complements the Skin Perfecting Primer. It has a light, sparkly tint that not just conceals dark circles and discoloration, but also brightens my eye area and makes me look more awake. As a bonus, it features an advanced formula that hydrates, smoothes, firms and nourishes the skin, providing long-term solutions to skin issues under the eyes.

Overall, I’m very happy with my new discoveries. Using products that act both as a treatment and makeup don’t just save me money and application time, it also reduces my skin’s exposure to potentially toxic ingredients that come with applying too many skin care and makeup products.

Lady Luck

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

The work week is almost over and I’m eagerly awaiting my annual girls’ trip to Vegas this weekend. 110 degrees…what better time to go to a hot desert and sit out by the pool in the scorching sun? Might not be the best idea, but what the heck, I’ll go with it. To prepare for this adventure I have been going down my Beauty checklist.

Aside from eating right and hitting the gym extra hard, there are a few beauty essentials that are a must when preparing to be in a bikini by a crowded pool for the weekend: Mani/Pedi, spray tan, cry baby mascara and packing the right essentials to easily transition from a day to night look.

To start, I did a DIY mani/pedi, due to lack of time and the fact that I’m saving money for the Black Jack tables (hopefully lady luck is on my side). SpaRitual has a wonderful collection and my color of choice for this trip is Poppy Crème. This will come along for the ride in case I need to do any touchups. As for the other beauty products, sunscreen is a MUST and I will be slathering it on several times throughout the day to ensure maximum coverage and protection. In case my friends or I do get a burn, the Hydrating Aloe Continuous Mist Spray by Hampton Sun is a great way to soothe, hydrate and cool the skin. This will help transition our sun-kissed (or burned) skin to the night time fun!

After a long day of…“lounging” by the pool the last thing I want to do is take a long time to get ready for the night, so I try to make this process as easy as possible. With the crybaby mascara, I can check lashes off my list, as I have no need to even worry about applying additional mascara for at least two weeks! I got this process done yesterday and I’m good to go. The only other essentials I will need to bring is a good tinted moisturizer and/or BB cream as both are extremely convenient, eyeliner, a good lipstick and last but definitely not least, my No More Shine Skindinavia Makeup Finishing Spray. There it is the day/night transition-Vegas here we come!

What are some of your beauty tips for an easy day/night transition?

Stila Scores with My Skin!

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

Stila Set & Correct Baked Powder Trio came to my rescue just when my skin needed a little pick me up. It would be amazing if I could wake up every day with perfect skin without having to touch it up, but the reality is we all have our flaws whether it’s the dark under eye circles, blotchiness or a dull appearance. This amazing new powder illuminates, highlights and works as a complexion corrector to even out skin tone. The 3 built-in blended shades include peach to brighten, green to minimize redness and lavender to offset a sallow appearance on your skin. It comes in a sleek black compact with a unique built-in lever that turns clockwise to shave the pressed powder turning it into a silky loose powder. I put the powder to the test on my skin buffing a little extra with my kabuki brush on my nose and cheeks, which is where I get the most red. It quickly diminished the red and left my skin smooth, I was hooked! I’m now using it as a base too before applying my mineral foundation. It leaves a velvety finish for a smoother foundation application with better coverage. I noticed that it also helps minimize the appearance my large nose pores.

The other amazing thing is that it’s also great for your skin too! Vitamin E provides antioxidant protection to prevent free-radical damage, which can cause premature aging. Jojoba oil moisturizes and is great for acne-prone skin. This is a definite must-have for all you beauty junkies!

Summer Kiss with jane iredale

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

Summer makeup is all about looking natural, especially if you’re planning to spend most of summer lounging by the beach. The same rule applies with summer lips.

I usually try to steer clear of makeup during warmer months, lipstick especially, because I get dehydrated easily and that shows on my dry, chapped lips. Usually I’d go for a medicated lip balm—or if I need some color when I go out at night, a medicated lip balm with a hint of tint. Yes, that’s all the makeup my lips would usually get.

That is until I tried jane iredale’s Just Kissed Lip Plumper in Milan. The first thing I loved about this lip color is its shade—a natural-looking, nude pink shade. Its sheer color is so summery; it looks effortlessly pretty. It’s perfect if you want to wear a little bit of color without looking too made up.

I also like that this creamy formula glides smoothly on my lips—it’s buttery, but not sticky. Plus, its gorgeous, light-catching shimmer stays on for the most part of the day, whether at work or play. But more than that, I also find that minty feel (as well as that slight tingling sensation) so refreshing on my lips. It’s almost like that fresh, clean feeling you get when you just brushed your teeth.

Of course, I must admit that I have some biases when it comes to jane iredale products. I did my research before I picked this product. I already know that jane iredale’s entire makeup line comes from naturally derived ingredients, with no harmful ingredients like talc, perfume, alcohol, dyes or anything that can harm my skin.

True enough, this lip color is enriched with vitamins so your lips would feel as good as they look. It features natural oils from shea butter, sunflower and aloe vera to soften and moisturize your lips; lemon and tangerine oils to exfoliate dead skin cells; and unique time-released peptides to encourage healthy collagen production. And as if that’s not enough, it features ginger root extract, as well as spearmint and peppermint to oils, to stimulate blood circulation and plump your lips naturally. Whew! That’s a slew of benefits from a lipstick!

Honestly, when I got this lipstick, I wasn’t looking for something to plump my lips. All I needed was a lip enhancer that could moisturize and give it a slight hint of color. But with this product, I got those and so much more! I got smooth, healthy, plump and soft lips! This is definitely going to be one of my beach-bag staples.
