I’m somewhat of an anomaly within my company, career, and probably most women my age- I know close to nothing about beauty products! My lack of knowledge when it comes to primers, powder, plumpers, serums, sprays and just about anything makeup related has become increasingly evident since I began my current job at a high-end beauty company. Prior to this job, my bathroom cabinet was constantly stocked with generic lotion, plain soap, one brand of makeup (same shades as in high school!) and whatever drugstore shampoo happened to be on sale that week. Now, I have a plethora of products at my finger tips and no idea what to do with them! As it turns out, I don’t even know how to apply blush properly. Lucky for me, I sit next to Lesley- a cosmetic genius, skin care guru and all-around whiz with a makeup brush. Also lucky for me, she isn’t shy about offering “constructive criticism.”

Lesson One- How to Apply Blush (without looking like the main attraction at a five year old’s birthday party)

I may not have a huge variety of colors and products in my bag, but my favorite cant-live-without item is blush and needless to say, I am slightly heavy handed in the application process. The other day, I received a new Colorescience Blush with a built in blush brush and was so eager to try it out that I applied it right at my desk. After swiping it across my cheekbones, I inspected myself in the mirror. I murmured an approving “mmhhmmm” and thought, “Not bad! Nice rosy color, what more could a girl want from a blush?” Once I looked up over the cubicle divider and saw Lesley’s face I knew that my assessment was slightly off.

After nicely explaining that I had essentially drawn pink racer stripes across my face, she took the time to impart her wisdom and explain the correct way to apply blush.

Step 1. Choosing the right blush -

“Your blush color should match your skin tone. Think about the color of your cheeks when you get out of the shower or after you finish exercising and try and find a blush that matches that shade,” explained Lesley. “Obviously, lighter pinks look better on fair skin and warmer colors look great on darker skin tones.”

Step 2. Best Type of Blush Brush

“There are so many different types of makeup brushes and a lot of people assume just about any cosmetic brush will work for applying blush. Not true! Using a proper blush brush will make all the difference. A real blush brush has long, soft bristle and is either slanted or rounded shape. You should use the slanted brush if you are contouring and the rounded brush is for more even and natural placement of the powder.”

Step 3. Blush Application

“Blush can make your skin look healthier and vibrant with a couple quick swipes, however there is a correct way to apply blush and make sure it looks natural. Your skin naturally flushes on the apples of your cheeks, so that is where the blush should be applied. Look in the mirror and smile, that will help you determine where to apply. After brushing the blush onto your cheeks, make sure that it is blended properly. The key is to enhance your facial features but make sure it looks natural.”

Summer is here! As the days get brighter, so should your makeup palette. Take a cue from the recent runways ….go bold.! Choose a bold lip or bright eye — think shimmer, sheer textures and fun!

The key to a brighter palette for summer is knowing which colors to choose for your skin tone. A good rule of thumb is the darker your skin tone, the brighter the colors you will be able to pull off. Darker complexions can wear bright colors with ease without going overboard. Think jewel tones, and for the adventurous, neons. If you keep the texture sheer, the whole rainbow is yours to play with. Light to medium skin tones should try deep pastels to get their pop of color. Keep in mind to only choose one feature to highlight. Choose either bold lips or a bright eye but never both.

For lips, pick up pink and berry shades. Save the nudes to balance your smoky eyes at the office holiday party. CARGO lipstick in CeCe is a great summer berry shade. Bonus points: the package is eco-friendly. Skip matte textures and use satin or sheer lipsticks. Glosses are always my number one pick for summer! The shine makes lips look fresh and you can always find one with a lot of pigment to rival lipstick. Check out Clearly Pretty from Tricia Sawyer Beauty. It looks like clear gloss in the tube, but turns your lips the perfect color for your own skin tone. For waterproofing at the beach, choose a lip and cheek stain. You’ll get long lasting, easy-to-apply color.

For summer fun with eyes, choose either a bright shadow or an adventurous liner. My favorites for summer are bright cream shadows. Try a royal purple for darker skin tones and a bright lavender for medium skin tones. Mascara is a must for all seasons but at the beach try a waterproof formula from your favorite brand. Add ice cream, sand, and enjoy!

If you haven’t noticed my enthusiasm for summer in my recent blog posts, then you aren’t reading the Beautyfix blog enough. One of the best things of summer is getting that summer glow. The best way to achieve this is with an amazing bronzer and it’s one of the season’s must have beauty products. Here’s how to use the best face bronzer to get an overall sun kissed glow for summer time. Bronzer can also be used to create shadow, slim your face and get that unforgettable glow like Gisele’s.

You can create an amazing healthy, glowing look by using bronzing powder. There are many available that you can pick up but here are a few favorites:

Too Faced The Bronzed and The Beautiful provides 3 amazing bronzers in one kit for an affordable price. Perfect for any season, especially summer and caters to any skin tone. Its’ easy to get the “I just got back from the Caribbean glow with Sun Bunny, Snow Bunny and Bronzer in Pink Leopard, accompanied with its own super soft kabuki bronzing brush. Not only does it come with all three, but it comes in a mirrored compact perfect for on the go. Simple glaze your cheeks, neck, collarbone and lightly dust your face and you’re all set with a gorgeous glow.

Always avoid bronzers that are too orange. This will cause your natural looking glow to look like you’ve spent a little too much time in the tanning salon. For this I suggest using Redpoint’s Rejuvenating Bronzing Silk or Laura Gellar’s Balance N Bronze. These will provide an irresistible glow without any harsh lines that will blend perfect with any skin tone. Laura Gellar’s Balance N Bronze is a multi-hued baked powder enriched with vitamin E that will provide an illuminating glow that will even out your skin tone instead of disturbing your skin. It’s important to use a bronzing powder rather than a liquid on oily or acne prone skin. This way it absorbs oil, creates an even skin tone and is better for the health of your skin.

For mature or dry skin a liquid bronzer is recommended. These formulas tend to be lighter in weight and won’t sink in to any fine lines or wrinkles, making your skin look younger. Stila’s Sun Gel and Cargo’s Multi Mix bronzer are prime examples of what a great liquid bronzer can do. Not only are they great for the face but they are multi-functioning and can be used on other areas of the body as well. When using a liquid bronzer, you’ll need to use a smaller amount for your face. This prevents it from the color being too dark, and you can regulate exactly how glowing you want to be.

Another simple trick that I love to add after applying bronzer, is sweeping my cheeks with a little bit of shimmer. My absolute favorite product for this is Jane Iredale’s 24 Karat Gold Dust Powder. It’s completely amazing and has real 24 karat golf flakes in it! (Hint: You may have received it in a past Beautyfix.)While providing a gorgeous shimmer and color to my skin it’s also perfectly reflected in any light and it’s very affordable. You can use it as a body duster, bronzer, eye shadow or lip color. If you’re looking for an all around product this is it and it won’t leave you disappointed. Watch this video to learn some tips on using the 24 Karat Gold Dust Powder from Jane Iredale herself here!

Any of these great products will give you a youthful, golden fresh look for any occasion. Instead of shying away from getting the beach bunny look, give it a shot. You’ll have people fooled into thinking you just got back from a luxurious, tropical vacation.

By Tasha Reiko Brown

Spring has sprung! The flowers are in bloom, the sun is shining and your face is …melting? Time to switch up your makeup techniques to keep them heat and melt proof. For truly melt proof makeup, think layering and textures. Your warm weather look should be more sheer and a lot less heavy in colors, texture, and application. Does applying less product mean constant retouches and easy fading? Not with the right products!

Try a lighter base such as Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer. The less foundation you wear, the less likely anything over it will slide off in the heat. Textures will be able to truly ‘grab’ onto your skin. Apply sparingly with clean fingers and blend into areas where needed.

For eyes that stay put try a lid primer before applying a light layer of liquid shadow. The liquid shadow will dry to a powdery finish and have more staying power than a cream but with the same sheer finish. Try Chanel’s Ombre D’Eau. Follow with two coats of black waterproof mascara (I like L’Oreal’s Voluminous) and as Tyra Banks would say… “Smize” – smile with your eyes!

For cheeks and lips that keep glowing I like stains. A good lip and cheek stain will last all day and can be layered over with a powder blush on cheeks or gloss on lips for an extra glow. On cheeks apply and work quickly to blend in. Layer the applications if you want more intense color. On lips simply fill them in and let set for about 10 seconds before applying gloss. If you prefer your favorite lipstick, put on a layer, blot with tissue and repeat making a more creamy stain on the lips. I like Josie Maran’s new Magic Marker Lip and Cheek Stains.

To finish your sunny day look, add a glow with Cargo’s Water Resistant Bronzer. With a fluffy natural hair brush, apply bronzer where the sun would normally hit on the forehead, temples, bridge of nose and chin. Swipe under your cheekbones for a more dimensional look. Now enjoy your day in the sun.

Young girls love to play dress up, and for many of us our infatuation with makeup began at a young age. We put on various shades of our mother’s lipstick and eye shadows and paraded around in her high heels and LOVED it. Eventually dress up evolved into something a little more sophisticated as we started to learn the basics of beginner’s makeup, and a new obsession began that in time developed into how we primp ourselves today. Although we may have played dress-up with mommy’s red lip stick, girls generally don’t’ start wearing makeup until they hit high school or junior high at the earliest.

My new obsession with beauty haul videos brought me to this gem of a video:

There is a disclaimer that this 5 year old cutie is only demonstrating makeup for beginners and is not something she does every day which is a great relief. I hate to admit it, but this little girl is already better at putting on mascara than me and I’ve been doing this for years. But that brings me to the question of how old should girls be to start wearing makeup?

From my personal experience, girls that wore makeup in elementary school were made fun of and it started with the lip gloss craze in junior high years. Having little sisters, I didn’t get asked any makeup advice until recently which is their freshman year in high school. In these years for a girl in high school, wearing makeup is almost expected and also a fun thing to do with the girls. Shopping for it with friends, teaching each other how to get the perfect cat-eye liner look, and finding the perfect lip gloss are all things that are fun for young girls as activities. These times are critical because are sculpting what they think their definition of beauty is. As a parent, it can be a little bit of a difficult decision if you don’t want your baby girl dolled up in class which is understandable. What if they’re just using it as a form of self expression? The main thing that is important to watch out for is if they are running up the credit card at the mall or looking like a clown when they walk outside the door. That may be the time to step in. Showing your teen that modesty is the best way to interpret fashion and beauty is a great way to get involved. SuddenlyDarling.com is a site for teens made by teen queen Katelyn Rose, giving tips on fashion forward styles and getting them active in a positive way. Take it from the YouTube How To and Style stars, your daughter may make a fortune just by doing how-to put on makeup videos. Enjoy another adorable video from the teeny makeup queen.

How old were you when you first started wearing makeup?

Women often think about what guys want, but what about when applying their makeup? When it comes to makeup, what women find attractive can be completely different than what men find attractive. This brings us to the topic of what men want women to know when it comes to our makeup. Luckily, the handsome men around me enlightened me to their opinion on the subject and guess what? Too much makeup is a big DON’T.

Cakey Foundation = MAJOR DON'T flickr user: Byron Rode Photography

When I asked the question of “what makeup style is your favorite on a girl?” 95% of the men answered that they loved a more natural look on women. This isn’t surprising, because men don’t generally notice makeup unless it’s caked on, but it’s a seriously valid point. At any given time of the day just walking down the street I can point out many girls that need to tone down their makeup routine. It’s simple, men like natural makeup. This doesn’t exactly mean that you shouldn’t wear any makeup at all, but from your day to day tone it down a few notches. You don’t need the smokey eye for work or to do grocery shopping. The most important piece of advice that men will give you is that your makeup should be appropriate for you and the setting that you’re in. If you’re going to Sunday brunch, you should not look like you’re about to go clubbing. Cakey foundation is a HUGE no- no. If your face comes off in a towel, that should be a hint that you’re wearing too much makeup. Too much base layer is the biggest complaint from men. A MAC force field doesn’t make you sexy it’ll scare the boys away. The best makeup tip for an everyday look is using a light powder, mascara, a little bit of blush and a light color on your lips. The doll face type of streaky blush is not something that guys love.

The smokey eye look is not only sexy and seductive but it’s perfect for a night on the town if you don’t over-do it. Most guys don’t mind this eye shadow trend on occasion. This means that if you’re going golfing smokey eyes probably aren’t a good idea, but if you’re going out for dinner and dancing it’s a great complement. Eyes are one of the first things a man notices. If you’re looking to play with color, try using a complementary color to your hair and eye color. If you’re worried about spending the night, try using a shadow that doesn’t come off easily. If you’re waking up to a new man with raccoon eyes, you can bet that he’s not going to like that surprise in the morning. I love Too Faced’s High Impact Shadow Collection because it lasts and stays on all while coming with shadow insurance.

Lip gloss VS lipstick is a controversy. I admit that I’m a huge lip gloss and lipstick junkie and I’m not stopping anytime soon. My boyfriend HATES lip gloss with a passion because when it comes to giving him some sugar, that stickiness from the gloss is coming off on him (and that shade of pink doesn’t complement his skin tone.) It’s a double bad scenario because not only does he have to wipe off his lips, but my perfect pout is halfway gone. The answer to this is a lip stain. Goes on, doesn’t come off, problem solved. Lipstick is another thing that guys don’t’ mind but again don’t go overboard. If you’re in the mood for a red lip, don’t pair it with clown eyes. Red lips are perfect for the right occasions, just not for an everyday look. A red lip paired with a classic look all around can be stunning, just pick the right time to do it.

Confidence is key. We’re all a little guilty of using makeup to boost our confidence. We just need to be conscious of how much exactly we are using. Everyday makeup should accentuate our natural features. It’s ok to experiment with colors and have fun with makeup, but if you’re trying to get the attention of a certain guy, looking like an art experiment isn’t going to do it. Carry yourself with confidence and appreciate your face and features. When it comes to what men find attractive makeup-wise, just ask yourself if your look is age appropriate, setting appropriate and YOU appropriate, then you’re all set. Remember, simple is most effective when it comes to what men find attractive.

“If you’re looking like you could be good friends with Snooki, I won’t even think of talking to you.” – B. Artz

The vampire craze has inspired a lot of makeup looks in beauty news as well as the music industry. One of the most hidden trends so far that’s come from this is men’s makeup. We may not realize it, but many recording artists, actors and men alike are wearing makeup. The difference is they aren’t going for the red lips trend (unless it’s the guys from the band KISS), but using makeup and skin care as a grooming mechanism. Here are some of the trends that are popular with the guys that even your man may consider.

Women aren’t the only ones with flaws and blemishes. Men aren’t immune to this and usually, their dark circles are more prominent. To fix this, a men’s makeup easy fix is to use a light reflecting concealer for dark circles. A pen-like concealer with an application brush is usually the easiest. Start at the darkest part of the eye and work your way out and blend. If you’re caking it on too much, you’ll be able to see the line of difference, so the important part is less is more.

Guy liner has been seen around on the peepers of Pete Wentz, Joel Madden, Brett Michaels, Axel Rose and many musicians. The latest young star to make headlines is the glamazon Adam Lambert. He’s definitely coining the guy liner with his publicity and daring look. This trend can be taken to many different degrees. Just as you can create heavy vertical and horizontal lines on your eyes, a little guy liner helps make his eyes stand out and pop. Instead of lining the top of the eyelid, lining underneath the eye adds contrast and definition. You can use any eye pencil, but the men will generally like the more masculine looking eye liners.

Flickr User: Bricehardelin

Eyebrows are always an important part of the face. Not only is it framing your face, but no one likes to see caterpillars over anyone’s eyes – especially bushy man-brows. Thankfully, more and more men are going to get their eyebrows done and we couldn’t be happier to see this trend. Eyebrow waxing, tweezing and threading are methods that can be done for a quick clean up of his eyebrows. Rest assured we’re not talking about getting those pencil thin brows for men. It’s nice to just get them a little cleaned up, and get rid of the unibrow. Another trick he can use is trimming them and brushing them to keep them tame. It’s just like brushing your hair or in this case, the mustache. Good grooming is the key to looking sharp.

For me, these trends are not only fun for him to play with but it’ll boost his confidence too. Instead of being a little afraid when we see a man with eyeliner, embrace it. We have to remember that throughout the years, (thousands of years) men have been wearing and loving makeup. Who knows, your man could look a little sexier with some eyeliner on. Let him play with your makeup kit, this trend isn’t go anywhere. Just don’t let him take it too far towards a drag look.

Everyday we execute actions either knowingly or subconsciously. Sometimes these actions are habitual and aren’t always the best especially when it comes to grooming and beauty. We’re all guilty of bad beauty habits, but can we do anything to kick them out the door? Luckily, we have a few simple ways to lose those addictions. Here are a few bad beauty habits that we recommend you kick to the curb so you can look your best.

Bad Beauty Habit #1 – Sunbathing and not using SPF

In our lifetime we’ve all taken some time in the sun to get that bronzy glow. It makes you look healthier and it’s easy to love getting that vitamin D. Sunbathing can lead to cancer so the trick here is to not do it. Never use tanning beds, and when you are in the sun use SPF. An easy way to remember is by using products that have SPF already in it. There are moisturizers like Coola’s Organic Moisturizing Suncare Sport 45, that will give you lasting coverage and moisture throughout the day. Using makeup containing SPF is also an easy trick. Hourglass has a lightweight liquid foundation with SPF 15 that feels like velvet on your skin. One thing that has helped me keep up with my sun protection is keeping a mineral SPF brush in my purse. That way, it’s always with me and I have no excuses not to use it. I like the Colorescience Sunforgettable Brush – it gives me the SPF I need plus an added shimmer as an option.

Bad Beauty Habit #2 – Sleeping and working out with makeup on

This is the one that most women have a lot of trouble with. A lot of times we are so busy, that by the end of the night we forget to take the time to remove the icing from the cake. The next morning, we wake up with obnoxious raccoon eyes and smudges on our pillow. Sleeping with makeup on not only makes us look like the bride of Frankenstein in the morning, but it’s bad for our skin. This can increase the speed of the aging process and is a harboring unit for bacteria. How can we have gorgeous skin when there’s old makeup trapped in our pores? Same thing goes for working out with makeup on. As you’re sweating, your pores are opening up and trying to secrete sweat. If you’ve got makeup on your sweat can get trapped in your pores and cause unnecessary breakouts. We all want to look our best all the time, but there’s nothing worse than seeing a girl with caked up makeup on at the gym. The best solution for this is to use cleansing wipes before bed or working out. They are easy to use and work well when you’re on the go. Jemma Kidd’s cleansing wipes are antioxidant rich, alcohol free, and come in cute packaging you won’t be embarrassed to put in your purse or car.

Source: Flickr user Bonnie BonBon

Bad Beauty Habit #3 – Squinting

The sun can be brutal to more than our skin – what about our precious eyes? It may seem simple, and so many people use sunglasses, but there’s a shocking number of women that don’t. Even if it’s cloudy, the haze can still make you squint. Excessive squinting can cause wrinkles, and fast. We spend so much time on anti-aging and preventing fine lines and crow’s feet, why would we want to accelerate the process? Simple solution: Sunglasses! Get a pair anywhere you like! If you’re a designer junkie, grab some Prada sunglasses. If you’re on a tight budget, cheap ones will do just fine. Just be sure that your sunglasses offer the correct protection against UVA and UVB rays. Out of this, your eyes will be at rest and less strained.

Some may not have trouble with these few things, but the majority of women do. The best thing that we can do for our wellness, and ourselves is to be more aware of our actions. Simple steps and prevention is worth a pound of cure. I’d rather be in the percentage of women with beautiful skin, than plagued with unruly wrinkles. These beauty tips will have you one step closer to preventing aging.

What bad beauty habits do you have?

Valentine’s Day is our day ladies. A day that we get pampered and showered with surprises, flowers and gifts from our significant other, family or friends. Most importantly, some of us have hot dates to attend and want to look like the sexy goddess that you are. Spring trends are here, and now’s the time to test drive what hair styles and makeup will make him salivate. Whether it’s a night of seduction or a night out on the town with a new fling, we’ve got a valentine beauty guide just for you.

Hair styles that look easy and natural are the way to go with men. If it looks like you’ve spent 4 hours curling and crimping your hair, chances are that he’s not going to like it. Playing up your current hairstyle is a cheap and easy way to get what you want. The key thing to think about is; you want it to be touchable and soft. Over working your hair is a no-no so don’t over-think it! Hair styles to consider this Valentine’s Day are:

Source: Flickr user Albert Brendenhann

Short hair styles: If you’ve got the pixie cut, smooth and sleek is the way to go. Blow dry your hair and use a smoothing serum to get the perfect look that exudes confidence.

Shoulder length hair: Soft waves are a sexy trend this spring. Use a medium barrel curling iron to create soft waves from the crown to the ends. You can use a light hair spray for hold, but beware; using too much hair spray will make it crispy. Another great style is the blowout that will blow his mind. If you’ve got layers in your hair, use a round brush to add volume, or hot-rollers to create voluptuous locks that he won’t be able to stay away from.

Long hair styles: You can go two ways with your long locks, sleek and straight or long, heavenly waves. For the straight look, channel your inner Reese Witherspoon, blow dry with a flat brush and use a smoothing serum to tame frizz. Tousled waves require a medium barrel curling iron with a touch of spray. I’ve found that blow drying your hair before trying to get waves; can sometimes make your hair go flat, so air drying your hair can help create natural curl. A great reference for long gorgeous waves is Marisa Miller (who nailed the tousled waves look at the Super Bowl this year), Rachel Bilson or Gisele Bunchen.

Men generally, don’t like a face that has been caked on so accenting your facial features is the best way to go. My beauty advice is to pick one part of your face, like your eyes, lips or cheeks, and sex them up. To get more bang for your buck a lip and cheek stain is a great beauty buy. Tarte has a genius stain that you may use for either your cheeks to make your cheeks delicious or for your lips for that “come-hither” look. Either way, you can use this product over and over again to achieve different looks as a multi-functioning cosmetic. I recommend this in Cloud 9 or Tickled by Tarte for a flirtatious look. I also love Benefit’s Benetint or Lorac’s Sheer Wash lip & cheek tint for a dark, erotic look. If you’re playing up your eyes a risqué smokey eye is best. Bronze eyeliner is a hot trend for spring that can pair well with a romantic smokey look. If you’re playing up your lips, there’s nothing better than an alluring red for Valentine’s day. Duwop’s Pure Venom in Pure Berry do the trick and exude style and sultry to drive your man wild.

Remember ladies, it’s your time to spice it up and shine, so take a little extra in your busy schedule to prepare. After all, getting roses and chocolates has never looked sexier with that pout.

Picking the perfect foundation can be rough, especially if you’re an internet shopper like I am. Luckily, there are ways to get around this difficulty, by getting to know your brands and your skin. Once you get the basics down, foundation can be the staple of your beauty routine and work wonders for your look.

When picking out a foundation there are a few things you should consider before making a choice. Your skin tone and skin type play a huge role in the selection process. Choosing a foundation that’s not suited for your skin type can cause difficulty applying, skin irritation and bad performance from the product. Not only will it feel wrong but it won’t mesh well with your skin causing it to look unnatural.

Here’s what you should consider:

Skin tone

Skin type

Normal

Oily

Combination

Sensitive

Dry

Proper formula of foundation

Liquid

Cream

Pressed powder

Mineral

Tinted moisturizer

Celebrity makeup and Beautyfix panelist Shiyena gave us some of her professional insight to finding the right foundation.

“First, figure out if you have pink undertones or olive undertones in your skin. If you use darker shades, check to see if you have red, blue or yellow undertones.

Second, when choosing your foundation, check to see if the foundation you chose has your undertones in them.

Third, test the foundation color on both your neck/chest area as well as your cheek/jaw line area. If possible, step outside to get the most natural light. It’s hard to see in departments store lights and it may give you false impressions of the foundation color. The right foundation should literally blend right into your skin. If you can see the streaks of color, you have the wrong color on. Try another color.

If a certain brand is not working and you can’t seem to get the right color, try another brand. Just remember, the right foundation should blend right into your skin. It’s about evening out your skin to make it look flawless, not masking it! If you have great skin but a have just a few blemishes, you could even just spot conceal and skip the foundation overall. Less is definitely more! “

Flickr user: Eire Sarah

The right formula can be hard to find, but the best way to find what you like is by testing out a few samples after choosing the category that is recommended.

Liquid foundation can be used for all skin types and is especially great for dry or mature skin. Usually, liquid foundations have light to medium coverage and come in many different finishes for the type of look you want to go for.(matte, satin, dewy) Liquid is great for smoothing out any discoloration, flaws or unevenness. Liquid foundation is also moisturizing, and can be applied with a foundation brush, sponge or fingers. I swear by Smashbox High Definition Healthy FX Foundation and MAKE UP FOR EVER’S HD Foundation. These feel like you’re wearing nothing at all after applying and silk when you put it on.

Cream foundation is generally used for heavier coverage and has a heavier consistency. This is great for covering discolorations, uneven texture and imperfections. This has medium to full coverage and can be applied with a sponge, foundation brush or your fingers and is best suited for normal, combination or dry skin.

Pressed powder is what I like to call a wonder product. It can be used for coverage, quick fixes or take the place of a liquid foundation. It evens out your skin tone and soaks up excess oil. A pressed powder foundation is ideal for someone with oily skin and gives light to medium matte coverage.

There’s been a huge hype recently about mineral makeup and I can say that I’m very much a fan of it, especially mineral foundation. Mineral foundation is light, moisturizing and absorbing. It’s perfectly suited for people with sensitive skin and offers light to medium coverage depending on the brand. Mineral foundation can be applied sparingly, or used more heavily for better coverage with a powder brush or kabuki brush.

Tinted Moisturizer is good for dry to normal skin and can be worn to protect and add a little glow to your skin without caking it on. Tinted moisturizer adds hydration to dry skin while lightly evening out your skin tone. My favorite tinted moisturizer is dermalogica’s Sheer Tint Moisture SPF 15. It provides coverage and SPF protection without feeling heavy on my skin.

If you’re buying online and aren’t sure about a couple products, user reviews and looking at product info can be a huge help. If you’re a beauty junkie and recognize ingredients, taking a look at the ingredient list is helpful too. Remember makeup should be fun and part of a luxury. Take your time in applying and enjoy the benefits of creating a smooth complexion.
