Men’s Makeup: Beauty News or a Trend Going Dead?

The vampire craze has inspired a lot of makeup looks in beauty news as well as the music industry. One of the most hidden trends so far that’s come from this is men’s makeup. We may not realize it, but many recording artists, actors and men alike are wearing makeup. The difference is they aren’t going for the red lips trend (unless it’s the guys from the band KISS), but using makeup and skin care as a grooming mechanism. Here are some of the trends that are popular with the guys that even your man may consider.

Women aren’t the only ones with flaws and blemishes. Men aren’t immune to this and usually, their dark circles are more prominent. To fix this, a men’s makeup easy fix is to use a light reflecting concealer for dark circles. A pen-like concealer with an application brush is usually the easiest. Start at the darkest part of the eye and work your way out and blend. If you’re caking it on too much, you’ll be able to see the line of difference, so the important part is less is more.

Guy liner has been seen around on the peepers of Pete Wentz, Joel Madden, Brett Michaels, Axel Rose and many musicians. The latest young star to make headlines is the glamazon Adam Lambert. He’s definitely coining the guy liner with his publicity and daring look. This trend can be taken to many different degrees. Just as you can create heavy vertical and horizontal lines on your eyes, a little guy liner helps make his eyes stand out and pop. Instead of lining the top of the eyelid, lining underneath the eye adds contrast and definition. You can use any eye pencil, but the men will generally like the more masculine looking eye liners.

Eyebrows are always an important part of the face. Not only is it framing your face, but no one likes to see caterpillars over anyone’s eyes – especially bushy man-brows. Thankfully, more and more men are going to get their eyebrows done and we couldn’t be happier to see this trend. Eyebrow waxing, tweezing and threading are methods that can be done for a quick clean up of his eyebrows. Rest assured we’re not talking about getting those pencil thin brows for men. It’s nice to just get them a little cleaned up, and get rid of the unibrow. Another trick he can use is trimming them and brushing them to keep them tame. It’s just like brushing your hair or in this case, the mustache. Good grooming is the key to looking sharp.

For me, these trends are not only fun for him to play with but it’ll boost his confidence too. Instead of being a little afraid when we see a man with eyeliner, embrace it. We have to remember that throughout the years, (thousands of years) men have been wearing and loving makeup. Who knows, your man could look a little sexier with some eyeliner on. Let him play with your makeup kit, this trend isn’t go anywhere. Just don’t let him take it too far towards a drag look.

Kick Bad Beauty Habits So You Can Look Your Best

Everyday we execute actions either knowingly or subconsciously. Sometimes these actions are habitual and aren’t always the best especially when it comes to grooming and beauty. We’re all guilty of bad beauty habits, but can we do anything to kick them out the door? Luckily, we have a few simple ways to lose those addictions. Here are a few bad beauty habits that we recommend you kick to the curb so you can look your best.

Bad Beauty Habit #1 – Sunbathing and not using SPF

In our lifetime we’ve all taken some time in the sun to get that bronzy glow. It makes you look healthier and it’s easy to love getting that vitamin D. Sunbathing can lead to cancer so the trick here is to not do it. Never use tanning beds, and when you are in the sun use SPF. An easy way to remember is by using products that have SPF already in it. There are moisturizers like Coola’s Organic Moisturizing Suncare Sport 45, that will give you lasting coverage and moisture throughout the day. Using makeup containing SPF is also an easy trick. Bad Beauty Habit #2 – Sleeping and working out with makeup on

This is the one that most women have a lot of trouble with. A lot of times we are so busy, that by the end of the night we forget to take the time to remove the icing from the cake. The next morning, we wake up with obnoxious raccoon eyes and smudges on our pillow. Sleeping with makeup on not only makes us look like the bride of Frankenstein in the morning, but it’s bad for our skin. This can increase the speed of the aging process and is a harboring unit for bacteria. How can we have gorgeous skin when there’s old makeup trapped in our pores? Same thing goes for working out with makeup on. As you’re sweating, your pores are opening up and trying to secrete sweat.  If you’ve got makeup on your sweat can get trapped in your pores and cause unnecessary breakouts. We all want to look our best all the time, but there’s nothing worse than seeing a girl with caked up makeup on at the gym. Bad Beauty Habit #3 – Squinting

The sun can be brutal to more than our skin – what about our precious eyes? It may seem simple, and so many people use sunglasses, but there’s a shocking number of women that don’t. Even if it’s cloudy, the haze can still make you squint. Excessive squinting can cause wrinkles, and fast. We spend so much time on anti-aging and preventing fine lines and crow’s feet, why would we want to accelerate the process? Simple solution: Sunglasses! Get a pair anywhere you like! If you’re a designer junkie, grab some Prada sunglasses. If you’re on a tight budget, cheap ones will do just fine. Just be sure that your sunglasses offer the correct protection against UVA and UVB rays. Out of this, your eyes will be at rest and less strained.

Some may not have trouble with these few things, but the majority of women do. The best thing that we can do for our wellness, and ourselves is to be more aware of our actions. Simple steps and prevention is worth a pound of cure. I’d rather be in the percentage of women with beautiful skin, than plagued with unruly wrinkles. These beauty tips will have you one step closer to preventing aging.

Romantic Hair and Makeup Looks for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is our day ladies. A day that we get pampered and showered with surprises, flowers and gifts from our significant other, family or friends. Most importantly, some of us have hot dates to attend and want to look like the sexy goddess that you are. Spring trends are here, and now’s the time to test drive what hair styles and makeup will make him salivate. Whether it’s a night of seduction or a night out on the town with a new fling, we’ve got a valentine beauty guide just for you.

Hair styles that look easy and natural are the way to go with men. If it looks like you’ve spent 4 hours curling and crimping your hair, chances are that he’s not going to like it. Playing up your current hairstyle is a cheap and easy way to get what you want. The key thing to think about is; you want it to be touchable and soft. Over working your hair is a no-no so don’t over-think it! Hair styles to consider this Valentine’s Day are:

Short hair styles: If you’ve got the pixie cut, smooth and sleek is the way to go. Blow dry your hair and use a smoothing serum to get the perfect look that exudes confidence.

Shoulder length hair: Soft waves are a sexy trend this spring. Use a medium barrel curling iron to create soft waves from the crown to the ends. You can use a light hair spray for hold, but beware; using too much hair spray will make it crispy. Another great style is the blowout that will blow his mind. If you’ve got layers in your hair, use a round brush to add volume, or hot-rollers to create voluptuous locks that he won’t be able to stay away from.

Long hair styles: You can go two ways with your long locks, sleek and straight or long, heavenly waves. For the straight look, channel your inner Reese Witherspoon, blow dry with a flat brush and use a smoothing serum to tame frizz. Tousled waves require a medium barrel curling iron with a touch of spray. I’ve found that blow drying your hair before trying to get waves; can sometimes make your hair go flat, so air drying your hair can help create natural curl. A great reference for long gorgeous waves is Marisa Miller (who nailed the tousled waves look at the Super Bowl this year), Rachel Bilson or Gisele Bunchen.

Men generally, don’t like a face that has been caked on so accenting your facial features is the best way to go. My beauty advice is to pick one part of your face, like your eyes, lips or cheeks, and sex them up. To get more bang for your buck a lip and cheek stain is a great beauty buy. Tarte has a genius stain that you may use for either your cheeks to make your cheeks delicious or for your lips for that “come-hither” look. Either way, you can use this product over and over again to achieve different looks as a multi-functioning cosmetic. I recommend this in Cloud 9 or Tickled by Tarte for a flirtatious look. I also love Benefit’s Benetint or Lorac’s Sheer Wash lip & cheek tint for a dark, erotic look. If you’re playing up your eyes a risqué smokey eye is best. Bronze eyeliner is a hot trend for spring that can pair well with a romantic smokey look. If you’re playing up your lips, there’s nothing better than an alluring red for Valentine’s day. Duwop’s Pure Venom in Pure Berry do the trick and exude style and sultry to drive your man wild.

Remember ladies, it’s your time to spice it up and shine, so take a little extra in your busy schedule to prepare. After all, getting roses and chocolates has never looked sexier with that pout.

Picking the Perfect Foundation for your Skin Type

Picking the perfect foundation can be rough, especially if you’re an internet shopper like I am. Luckily, there are ways to get around this difficulty, by getting to know your brands and your skin. Once you get the basics down, foundation can be the staple of your beauty routine and work wonders for your look.

When picking out a foundation there are a few things you should consider before making a choice. Your skin tone and skin type play a huge role in the selection process. Choosing a foundation that’s not suited for your skin type can cause difficulty applying, skin irritation and bad performance from the product. Not only will it feel wrong but it won’t mesh well with your skin causing it to look unnatural.

Celebrity makeup and Beautyfix panelist Shiyena gave us some of her professional insight to finding the right foundation.

“First, figure out if you have pink undertones or olive undertones in your skin. If you use darker shades, check to see if you have red, blue or yellow undertones.

Second, when choosing your foundation, check to see if the foundation you chose has your undertones in them.

Third, test the foundation color on both your  neck/chest area as well as your cheek/jaw line area. If possible, step outside to get the most natural light. It’s hard to see in departments store lights and it may give you false impressions of the foundation color. The right foundation should literally blend right into your skin. If you can see the streaks of color, you have the wrong color on. Try another color.

If a certain brand is not working and you can’t seem to get the right color, try another brand. Just remember, the right foundation should blend right into your skin. It’s about evening out your skin to make it look flawless, not masking it! If you have great skin but a have just a few blemishes, you could even just spot conceal and skip the foundation overall. Less is definitely more! “

The right formula can be hard to find, but the best way to find what you like is by testing out a few samples after choosing the category that is recommended.

Liquid foundation can be used for all skin types and is especially great for dry or mature skin. Usually, liquid foundations have light to medium coverage and come in many different finishes for the type of look you want to go for.(matte, satin, dewy) Liquid is great for smoothing out any discoloration, flaws or unevenness. Liquid foundation is also moisturizing, and can be applied with a foundation brush, sponge or fingers. I swear by Smashbox High Definition Healthy FX Foundation and MAKE UP FOR EVER’S HD Foundation. These feel like you’re wearing nothing at all after applying and silk when you put it on.

Cream foundation is generally used for heavier coverage and has a heavier consistency. This is great for covering discolorations, uneven texture and imperfections. This has medium to full coverage and can be applied with a sponge, foundation brush or your fingers and is best suited for normal, combination or dry skin.

Pressed powder is what I like to call a wonder product. It can be used for coverage, quick fixes or take the place of a liquid foundation. It evens out your skin tone and soaks up excess oil. A pressed powder foundation is ideal for someone with oily skin and gives light to medium matte coverage.

There’s been a huge hype recently about mineral makeup and I can say that I’m very much a fan of it, especially mineral foundation. Mineral foundation is light, moisturizing and absorbing. It’s perfectly suited for people with sensitive skin and offers light to medium coverage depending on the brand. Mineral foundation can be applied sparingly, or used more heavily for better coverage with a powder brush or kabuki brush.

Tinted Moisturizer is good for dry to normal skin and can be worn to protect and add a little glow to your skin without caking it on. Tinted moisturizer adds hydration to dry skin while lightly evening out your skin tone. My favorite tinted moisturizer is dermalogica’s Sheer Tint Moisture SPF 15. It provides coverage and SPF protection without feeling heavy on my skin.

If you’re buying online and aren’t sure about a couple products, user reviews and looking at product info can be a huge help. If you’re a beauty junkie and recognize ingredients, taking a look at the ingredient list is helpful too. Remember makeup should be fun and part of a luxury. Take your time in applying and enjoy the benefits of creating a smooth complexion.

Colored Mascara: Fun Fad or Fashion Don’t?

The other day my friend was shocked as she opened her brand new mascara and it was the wrong color. But it wasn’t just brown instead of black, it was electric blue! Colored mascara has gotten little pops of attention over the recent years, but they seem to be lighting up the run ways and red carpets more and more these days. There are many ways you can go with colored mascara, ranging from an eye color enhancing hint of pigment to straight day glow lashes. This trend is definitely one that needs to be followed carefully, as there is a very fine line between looking foxy and looking freaky.

If you are thinking of trying a mascara that enhances your eye color, there are a few out there that look black at first glance, but when they are hit by sunlight, you can see the hint of purple, green, or blue. They claim to make your natural eye color more vibrant using a contrasting color to your iris.

For green eyes, purple is a good choice to make eyes pop, as it has a red base, which is green’s complementary color. If you have blue eyes, a mascara with a hint of gold or amber will turn your eyes from dull to dazzling, as yellow is the opposite of blue. If your eyes are brown, then you are in luck, because you can get away with any color, (besides maybe white or bright yellow) but those colors don’t really go with any complexion.

One trick makeup artists use is to apply a coat of regular black or brown mascara, and then add a color to only the tips of your lashes. This way, your eyes are still well defined, and the look is not as severe.

If you are feeling daring and want to try some florescent hues, then just make sure you do it with a purpose. Colored mascara with no other makeup, stringy hair and a sweat shirt is never a good look. People will think you just stepped out of the loony bin. Instead, dress up and wear it to a party, where crazy makeup is expected, like Rhianna. In my opinion, the eye color that looks really fantastic in bright blue or green is brown eyes, like these beautiful brown eyes, and all other eye colors look best in purple.

Choosing the Best Makeup Brushes: Synthetic or Natural

We all aren’t makeup artists unfortunately, and it can be really difficult to know the difference between a makeup brush that is the superman of brushes or one you should never ever let touch your delicate skin. With so many to choose from, how do you go about picking the best makeup brushes? Since we aren’t pros, some important information should be considered before you venture into investing into an expensive makeup brush. There are many different types of hair and each one has different benefits, but one thing is for sure, throw that applicator that comes with your makeup away! You don’t want plastic, yucky bristles messing up your perfect application now do you? Natural hair tends to get softer with use and contain mostly virgin hair that has tapered ends to stay soft on the skin. Synthetic on the other hand can get stiffer as time goes on. Here’s a beauty guide to the different types of hair in makeup brushes.

Goat hair is very common in makeup brushes and usually distributes powder evenly. For most makeup artists, this is the most effective hair to pick up powder and deposit it evenly and smoothly. Goat hair brushes, interestingly enough, brings luster to your skin naturally and is perfect for buffing and blending. Pony hair is much like goat hair. They both don’t come to a point, which makes them great for cheeks, bronzer and blending. While goat hair can be a little coarse, pony hair is very fine and soft.  This is the most common type of hair when you’re looking at powder, cheek and contour brushes.

Squirrel hair is also a commonly used hair for makeup brushes. This is ideal for conical shaped brushes and usually is thicker in the middle of the brush, then comes to a point at the top. This type is the softest natural hair used in makeup brushes, and rest assured, it’s not the typical squirrel you find in your back yard. These brushes tend to be more on the expensive side, but are a great investment because of their durability. These brushes are best used for heavy pigment and blending eye shadows.

If you’re looking for brushes that last a lifetime, sable hair brushes would be the ones for you. With proper care, these brushes can last an extended amount of time. Sable brushes are resilient, amazingly soft and durable. These brushes usually have fine pointed tips and thick middles. This hair comes from mink found in Russia and China and can be found in 3 types: Kolinsky (highest quality), red sable and sable. These brushes are perfect for shadows and worth every penny in my opinion. Another benefit to sable is it can be used with wet or dry products, making it very versatile.

If you’re not into the natural hair brushes and want to go faux, synthetic brushes are available. Usually, these are made from nylon or taklon, and are less expensive. These brushes can still give you a smooth and even application, but has a harder time holding makeup in the brush because it lacks a cuticle. Synthetic brushes can be great for applying liquid foundation, concealer, cream shadows, cream eyeliners, and cream blush. The bad part about going faux is that over time synthetic brushes become stiff and they’re less durable.

Makeup brushes are really an investment in your beauty bag. They can be the difference between getting the perfect smokey eye, or having a beauty disaster, so save yourself the trouble and make the choice that’s right for you and your wallet.

How to Choose the Right Shade of Lipstick and Blush for your Skin Tone.

Good lipstick and blush can be a challenge to find if you don’t know how to choose the correct colors for your skin tone.  If you are having a hard time finding lip and cheek colors that look good on you, and are sick of feeling like a clown, here are some tips that will help you with your search.

Know what your skin’s undertone is.  There are two basic undertone colors, Warm (more yellow), and Cool (more blue).  To determine your skin tone, look at the underside of your arm. If your veins appear bluish you are cool toned, if they appear greenish you are warm toned. If you still can’t tell here is a quiz so you can know for sure.

For warm skin tones, chose colors like, coral, peach, rust, and deep brick reds, like Duwop’s Private Red. Stay away from pinky reds, and mauves as they will contrast badly with the yellow undertones in your skin.

For cool skin tones, chose colors with a blue undertone like Pink, Raspberry, Lavender, and Mauve, like Stila’s Lip Color Sheer in Natalie.

Blush colors follow the exact same rules – it doesn’t matter how light or dark your skin is – it’s just the undertone that you need to match. A bronze or orange-red is a beautiful color for warm skin tones, and purple-pinks, and berry colors will look natural on cool skin.

Follow just these rules, and it will relieve so much agony when buying new shades of lipstick and blush on your next shopping trip.

Makeup Trends Throughout the Decades – Beauty Looks of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s & 90’s

As we approach a new decade, it is fun to try and guess how we will be remembered by the generations after us. Being in the midst of it all makes it difficult to predict which trends will define our time, and which ones will be forgotten. Makeup trends over the last 10 years have been shocking and risk taking, but overall, I think our looks measure up well to the past few decades. Generations before us and the beauty looks of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s inspired our definition of beauty and influenced the makeup trends during the first decade of the 21st Century.

In the 60’s it was all about super long lashes, thick cat eye liner, pastel shadow, and frosted pale lips. Being known for its psychedelic glamour, the 60’s look is imitated today, with huge lash rimmed smokey eyes paired with nude glossy lips being a red carpet staple since the start of the millennium.

In the 70’s, the hot look was sun kissed and shimmery. Everyone wanted to look like Farah Fawcett, with dewy bronze skin, lightly defined eyes, and of course the feathered hair. Natural was in, and the makeup trend was less is more. If there is anything that has boomed over the last ten years, it’s the tanning industry. Sun worshipers are paying the price for years of unprotected sun exposure, and most of us have turned to sunless tanners to get that back from the beach glow, without the risk.

The 80’s traded natural for neon, and are still thought of as the wildest and most brightly colored decade. No particular shade was in, unless you consider “rainbow” a color. Bright pink lips and over the top everything went perfectly with the highly spirited (and pigmented) decade. The 80’s looks have been making a comeback in recent years with day glow lips and bold colored eye shadows; they are just applied in a less shocking way today.

As if the pattern was pre-planned, the 90’s flipped right back to the dark side. Color was out, and nude “anti-fashion” was in. The peppy beat of the 80’s was replaced with the grungy heroin chic attitude and style of the 90’s.   Today, the obsession with vampires (instead of rail thin runway models) has re-inspired the half-dead slept-on-hair and eyeliner look.

With such a mixture of styles to choose from, it is hard to say how we will be remembered. Hopefully in ten more years we aren’t shaking our heads with embarrassment as we look through old photos. But that being said, (besides a few red carpet makeup and fashion mishaps) I think we should be proud how beautifully we started the 2000’s.

I’m a firm believer of Skindinavia’s makeup finishing spray and have fallen in love with their No More Shine Makeup Finishing spray. This spray gives a matte finish to your look, helps control shine and excess oil (for when you overheat a little bit), helps reduce the appearance of smudging, creasing and makeup slippage and also saves up to 50% of makeup usage. How to Use Makeup Brushes

I will never forget my first makeup brush set I received Christmas morning when I was 15. I was thrilled beyond words that I had a full set of brushes and could finally attempt to look like my idols at the department store cosmetic counters. Having all the right tools made applying makeup flawlessly easy as pie. The one thing that would have made my complete makeup brush set actually complete is an instruction manual on how to use makeup brushes, but I have yet to come across a good one. To ensure your marvelous brushes all get equal love and attention, I am going to address some of the stranger looking specimens that may come in your set, so they don’t just sit there collecting dust.

One that usually perplexes the non-makeup guru is the fan brush. It might look strange but it can be really useful for a few tasks. Because of the sparseness (and almost airy quality) of the bristles, fan brushes are great for applying a light application of shimmer, bronzer, or blush to the cheek bones. It’s also an awesome brush for sweeping away extra shadow that falls beneath the eyes, avoiding those horrible streaks that your fingers will leave.

Another brush that isn’t as foreign to most people, but is one of the most important brushes to own is the crease brush.
