First dates are ridiculously nerve wracking, and not feeling confident in your appearance can make those butterflies even worse. Here are some beauty tips for your big night so you can relax and have fun, knowing you look stunning, making this the first date of many.

1. Less is more. It’s easy to get carried away with too much foundation and concealer when you are stressed about looking your best. Just try to keep in mind that men hate when makeup is really obvious and looks caked on. Using a really light application of foundation, bronzer and blush will give you a flawless glow, without making you look over done.

2. Focus on one or the other. Even if you are going on a super sophisticated glamorous date, it is best to decide on dramatic eyes, or dramatic lips, not both.  This doesn’t mean that if you wear cranberry lipstick, you have to leave your eyes bare, just don’t overdo the heavy black eyeliner and false lashes. Instead, opt for a subtle smokey makeup around the eyes with browns and taupe’s, using shades like the ones in this Raw Natural Beauty eyeshadow trio. Gently line the eyes and sweep on a coat of mascara, and your eyes will be defined, but not competing for attention with your bold lips.

3. Go easy on the fragrance. If you have a favorite perfume, spritz it only on three of your pulse points, the sides of your neck just below your jaw, on your inner wrists, and since scent rises over time, the backs of your knees. That will keep you smelling delicious all evening without it being too concentrated and over powering.

4. Last but not least leave your hair either down or half down so it looks touchable and soft. Crispy, slick hair can look severe and uninviting. And men love hair that they can run their fingers through. So even if you have curly hair, let your ringlets flow freely, just use a good curling product like Fredric Fakkai Coiff Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray to keep away frizzies.

Take these tips and combine them with a little charm and sense of humor, and your first date is guaranteed to be a success.

Find Your Fragrance: A Guide to Picking the Perfect Perfume

Ah perfume, the chemistry of a scent and a body can make you smell good, feel good and attract others, which makes it very important to us. What would we do without it? For some and most, purchasing a perfume for a loved one or friend can be difficult yet pleasing. The holiday season consists of tons of shopping and it happens online, department stores, beauty stores etc. As much as we want to save time doing our shopping sometimes we’re missing out on some vital aspects of actual experiencing what we should. It’s also good to understand what makes a fragrance a fragrance. There are more than thousands of scents to choose from and it can be very overwhelming, so here’s a perfume guide to help when choosing the perfect perfume for you or for someone else.

Smell around: Trying different fragrances can be fun and it can be a headache (literally). The best thing to do is use the tester sticks if you can and find one that smells appealing to you. Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, then you can start to actually try it on yourself. Use your wrist or arm and give the fragrance time to settle on your skin. This is the most important part, because the fragrance notes in it will react to your natural body chemicals and give off a different smell than your initial test. The first time you smell a perfume, you’re smelling the top notes, which wears off the quickest and usually when it reacts to your body chemistry. (I’m sure everyone has experienced buying a scent that you loved then when you actually wore it around, you hated it.) Sometimes scents will smell good on you and sometimes they work out best on others. When the top notes dissipate, then you start smelling the middle notes which is the main body of the perfume or the “heart”. About 30 minutes after applying your fragrance you’ll start to smell the deeper notes which are the base notes. These scents are usually much more rich and potent and are masked by the top and middle notes.

When you love a fragrance, take a look at what it’s comprised of to get a better knowledge of what scents work best on you. There are different families that classify the fragrance. For example, a fragrance that works great on me is Aquolina’s Pink Sugar which is an oriental fragrance notes are: bergamot, Sicilian orange, raspberry, fig leaves, lily of the valley, licorice, strawberry, red fruit, cotton candy, vanilla, caramel, musk, wood, and powder. Once you know what you like you can look into bottles that have the notes in it, as most venders have a directory of notes for each fragrance. There are also different classifications based on percentages of actual perfume oil in the fragrance versus how much alcohol/water content present.  Eau de parfum, eau de toilette, cologne, extrait de parfum, and straight perfume oil. My fave is Apothia’s Velvet Rope Roll on Oil.

Online shopping:  When you’re shopping online, having note knowledge takes a challenging situation and makes it much easier, especially when you have websites that lists a note guide and info about it. Use your best judgment and trust the info on the fragrance. If it’s for someone in particular, get to know their taste of smell and even what they are currently wearing. Most importantly, have fun!

When you’re choosing a perfume stick to what you know and what you like. Always go with your basic intuition and make sure that you’re happy with it. You’re the one going to be smelling it all day, keep that in mind, and don’t be afraid to follow your nose.

Lisa Hoffman with her husband, actor Dustin Hoffman – giving him a spa facial?!

Regularly traveling the world with her husband, actor Dustin Hoffman, Lisa Hoffman leads a life that most people only dream of. Her unique experiences led her to create Lisa Hoffman Beauty – a beautiful range of beauty products that include skin care, bath and body care, and fragrances. We had the pleasure of meeting with Lisa to discuss the inspiration behind her range of beauty products, her personal beauty routine, and advice on aging gracefully.

What inspired you to create your own beauty brand?
My love of beauty products, my experiences around the world, and my need to simplify my hectic life were my inspiration and my reason for creating this brand.  While traveling, I always observed and participated in the local beauty secrets. These experiences, along with a need that was unmet in the market place, namely, portability without sacrificing potency, lead me to create Lisa Hoffman Beauty.

What makes Lisa Hoffman Beauty products unique?

What makes my product line unique is that I took great care and went to great lengths to make sure that each ingredient and raw material chosen had a reason for being.  I’m proud that every aspect of this line has my fingerprint on it. Every single feature of each product is a reflection of my travels and life experiences.  I have been told by many of my customers that in such a highly saturated market, with so many options, they really gain a sense from my line that this is a product for women created by a woman.

What’s your daily beauty routine and how has it changed since creating your own line?

Since creating my line of products, my personal beauty routine has become more consistent.  No matter where I am, whether it’s at home or taking a trip with my family, I always can have my favorite products with me.  Every day I cleanse, moisturize and protect my skin.  I use my shower line in the morning and enjoy my bath line at the end of the day.  I always have one of my fragrances in my bag and I re-apply throughout the day.  On Sundays, I treat myself to a spa facial.

Any words of advice for women who would like to age gracefully?
Live as healthy a life as possible.  Exercise, sleep, and eat well.  Take care of your skin; be sure to cleanse, moisturize and protect it daily.
