The ‘Magic’ Trick To Fix A Dehydrated Complexion

Thursday, June 20th, 2013

Attention everyone whose skin freaks out during the summer: meet your new best friend, ARCONA Magic White Ice!

I know it’s not just me who finds it difficult to get the right kind of hydration during the summer. When it’s cold outside, my skin tends to feel super dry and I slather on a heavy moisturizer  morning and night—so much that it’s honestly a wonder my makeup even stays on. And I NEVER get blemishes! This time of year, it’s a different story. I’ve noticed my favorite heavy moisturizers  break me out and, generally speaking, just don’t do it for me. Thank goodness I discovered this product!

If you’re a gym person, you will LOVE the way it feels on your skin post-workout and face cleanse. It’s sort of like the cooling sensation you get from a product containing menthol, but without any kind of tingling or burning. (Key for skin like mine that’s red and flushed after a run.) If you’re not a gym person, you’ll still love it—if for no other reason than its profound ability to plump up your complexion and make it dewy soft without any greasiness. If ever there were a product for use underneath your sunscreen in the mornings, this is it, ladies!

Beautyfix 16 Sneak Peek: My Favorite Pick

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

Get excited, everyone: in September a new season of Beautyfix will be upon us! As a panelist, I’m lucky enough to get my hands on the entire season’s worth of selections in advance. And I know I say this every season, but WHOA! There are so many amazing skin care products this time around I’m barely going to contain my excitement.

I don’t want to ruin all the surprises, but will give you a sneak peek into the season by spilling the details on my personal favorite so far: Vichy Aqualia Thermal.

If you frequent the Beautyfix blog, then you know I have dry skin and love a good facial moisturizer. And this time of year, with all the heat and humidity, it’s kind of difficult to find something that completely agrees with my skin. I need intense moisture, but I don’t want anything too heavy or greasy. For its amazing ability to make my skin feel soft, hydrated and nourished without a trace of greasiness, this product fits the bill.

More great news: if you fall in love with Vichy Aqualia Thermal like I did and you decide you want to purchase the full-size version … it comes very reasonably priced. I’ve tried a lot of facial creams, lotions, serums and potions and honestly, this value is tough to beat.

Even MORE great news: in a matter of weeks, you’ll have ALL the new Beautyfix selections right at your fingertips to create your own custom kit.

Ever used Vichy Aqualia Thermal? I’d love to hear what you think about it!

Beautyfix Spotlight: Phytomer Hydra Original Thirst-Relief Melting Cream

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

Do you have dry skin like I do? Or even if you don’t, do you ever experience any seasonal dry skin patches? How about that tight, uncomfortable feeling that’s accompanied by your makeup settling into ALL your wrinkles and fine lines? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes” … I hereby urge you to drop everything you’re doing and get your hands on Phytomer Hydra Original Thirst-Relief Melting Cream.

I’m pleasantly surprised by products every single Beautyfix season. Not that I’ve ever expected disappointment. It’s just that, considering the extent to which I’ve experimented with different beauty products—moisturizers, serums, cleansers, toners, sunscreens, you name it—I never expect to come across something I’ve never tried. And maybe I should. Because I always do! Obviously, this isn’t the first dry skin moisturizer that’s made its way onto my desk, but boy, it might be the best! And while I had a feeling I’d like it, given that it’s a pretty basic product from Phytomer, a trusted spa brand that’s been around forever, I had no idea I’d love it as much as I do.

I want to take a bath in this stuff!

OK, that would be expensive. Really though, this dry skin moisturizer might really be the best I’ve ever tried. Why? Well, truth be told, I haven’t been using it long enough to realistically expect any dramatic transformations. But honestly, it’s a moisturizer. Other than the obvious, what do you want a moisturizer to do? Me, I just want it to make my skin soft, healthy and hydrated. A little softening of the lines is nice. But I hardly expect a face transplant. (Serums, though…different story. Of those I ask a lot.) Anyway, this particular dry skin moisturizer leaves my skin softer and more hydrated than any other I’ve tried. And it just feels so luxurious!

Needless to say I’ll be repurchasing this as soon as I run out. At $75.50 for 1.6 fluid ounces it’s not exactly cheap, but that price tag is pretty commonplace as far as moisturizers go. And yeah, I have a cabinet full of other stuff, but this is better and that’s that.

If you received Phytomer Hydra Original Thirst-Relief Melting Cream. in your most recent Beautyfix kit, tell me: are you as in love with it as I am?

Dry Skin Solutions

As a licensed esthetician for almost 8 years now, I’m thrilled to be joining the Beautyfix Blogging team as an ongoing contributor, where I’ll be able to share my insight on skin and beauty. This is my first blog post and I’m excited for everyone to check it out!

Dry skin symptoms can be a problem during the winter months. Skin dryness can feel unbearable and make you want to drench yourself with tons of body moisturizer to prevent itching. As if the itching wasn’t bad enough, flakiness, cracking and even redness can make your skin look like a skin condition gone wrong. No matter what, dry itching skin is unavoidable during the winter season.  Here are a few tips on how to prevent dry skin that can help bring back some relief to survive the winter months!

  1. Moisturize several times a day. Winter cold can strip away any moisture in your skin due to low humidity levels in the air. A rich moisturizer like Shea Butter works to seal in moisture keeping skin hydrated.
  2.  Placing a humidifier in your bedroom is a great way to bring back high moisture levels in the air. Since heaters create dry, hot air, they actually zap moisture from your skin causing it to become even drier.
  3. Avoid doing any facial treatments with ingredients like acids or alcohol that may be too harsh or irritating on your skin. Soothing facial products like milky cleansers, moisturizers with antioxidants and alcohol-free toners work best and won’t strip away any natural moisture your skin produces.
  4. Pamper and massage your feet with petroleum jelly before going to bed. Leave jelly on and throw on a pair of dry cotton socks to lock in as much moisture as you can get during your beauty sleep. Petroleum jelly protects skin by preventing any further water loss even chapped lips benefit from it too.
  5. Keep a travel size hand cream handy in your car, purse or desk. Hands constantly exposed to winter cold can make the delicate skin on your hands itch and crack if not hydrated on a regular basis. Applying hand cream and wearing a pair of gloves when going outside can help keep hands hydrated throughout the day.

Beautyfix Spotlight: Ole Henriksen’s Truth Revealed Super Cream and Dermacyte’s Oxygen Concentrate

I previously wrote about how I’d be in a winter wonderland for my holiday vacation and shared my skin care tips for protecting dry skin in the cold. In preparation for my 3 day stay in the desert and a 4 day stay in the mountains, I packed up my hydrating toner, moisturizer, moisturizer with SPF and serum awaiting the fresh air away from the cities. While enjoying myself in the sun of Palm Springs, I had mistakenly left a few of my precious beauty staples at the resort (you’re welcome for the free goods, maid service). Upon getting settled at the next resort in Lake Arrowhead, my heart dropped and panic ensued. I had prepared and taken the extra time to get the beauty products I needed for the perfect winter skin care routine and my serum and moisturizer with SPF were long gone. Wait a tick! I had stowed a few Beautyfix items in my purse just for these last minute cases. Ole Henriksen’s Truth Revealed Super Cream SPF 15 and Dermacyte’s Oxygen Concentrate to the rescue and both in a convenient travel size.

Not to fear Beautyfix is always here and again, it saved my skin. Just my luck, the travel sizes were the perfect fit for my 4 days in the cold, mountain air. 1st stop after cleansing, Dermacyte’s Oxygen Concentrate. This concentrate is meant to be used as a spot treatment for fine lines, blemishes, scars or imperfections, but in true beauty addict form, I slathered the application all over my face each day for my dry skin. What does it do?  It’s an all-purpose hypoallergenic serum specifically designed to enhance oxygen delivery promoting a healthier, more radiant complexion. It helps reverse the signs of aging, reduce the appearance of blemishes and delivers essential moisture leaving your skin rejuvenated and brighter.

Always remember that when you have over-dried skin, it can lead to breakouts so always use a moisturizer no matter your skin type. I don’t leave the house without a good layer of moisturizer and SPF to go along with it. Ole Henriksen’s Truth Revealed Crème SPF 15 was a pleasant surprise. I’ve found a new favorite and I will be hoarding these little jars. This little cream smells very delicate and contains micro algae and peptides to increase collagen production, help smooth fine lines and wrinkles and improve microcirculation for enhanced skin radiance. Not to forget, it also has Vitamin C to even your skin tone with a time-released delivery system giving you long lasting hydration and brilliant skin. It’s just another plus that this cream has an SPF in it as well.

The verdict: My skin has never felt or looked better! Combined with the fresh mountain air, my skin is supple, soft and completely blemish free. I have been face makeup free since the first day using both of these products. My skin is looking that clear right now! I don’t mean to brag, but if you’re looking for a dynamic duo, these two Beautyfix items definitely do the trick!

Dry skin care tip: Using creams that contain higher concentrations of essential fatty acids is the best way to maintain a soft and glowing complexion in even the coldest of environments. Oils like sunflower seed, grape seed, black currant, hazelnut, avocado, sesame, almond and wheat germ all have a high content of essential fatty acids and are known for their ability to comfort, soothe and protect skin. Fats do not freeze in cold weather, unlike water and water based extracts, so they will help maintain a velvety skin texture and prevent capillary breakage.
