Skin Care for Outdoor Adventurers

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

Now that winter’s officially over, hiking and other outdoor adventures are probably beginning to fill your weekend getaway calendar. So if you’re already organizing your hiking gears and apparel, make sure that you also include your outdoor skin care essentials.

Of course, hiking is not the time to be pretty, but because you’ll be exposed to different elements and unpredictable weather conditions, this activity, though fun and exciting, can really pose a lot of danger to your skin. So aside from my favorite Teva footwear, protective sun glasses, snack bars, and water, I do bring a lot of beauty travel essentials to keep my skin clean, hydrated and protected throughout the trip. Here are my favorite beauty-on-the-go items:

Sunscreen. The last thing you need when nursing sore muscles the day after a hiking expedition is sunburn. It doesn’t matter what time of the day you hike or how cloudy it is. The closer you are to the top, the greater your sun exposure is. Slather on a powerful sunblock at least an hour before the hike, and re-apply every 4 hours.

Lip and Skin Moisturizers. Exposure to cold mountain wind can also strip off essential oils on the top layers of the skin and lips and cause windburn, which is equally as painful as sunburn and can last for a few days. This is why I really like La Roche-Posay’s SX Daily Moisturizing Cream with Sunscreen because it’s not just a moisturizer but also a broad spectrum sunscreen that stays 95% active even after 5 hours.

Antibacterial Gels. Most trails, if not all, only have restrooms or portable toilets at the base or at the end of the trail. Rolls of tissue and hand sanitizers will surely come in handy.

Insect Repellent, Anti-histamine Spray and Band Aids. Nature in its unspoiled form is gorgeous, but that would also mean you’d have to deal with bugs and insects, poison oaks, and thorny bushes.

Hydration Mists. I wouldn’t have survived my hiking trips without Avene Thermal Spring Water. Spraying it on my face and arms is so refreshing. It makes me feel like I’ve just taken a shower—and that is really something especially on a hot, humid day.

Brave Soldier also has a skin care kit for athletes that can also be used for outdoor adventures.

Beautyfix Spotlight: Perricone MD Nutritive Cleanser

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Spring Beautyfix is finally here and there are lots of new beauty products that I’m so excited to try this season. One that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on for this beauty review is the Perricone MD Nutritive Cleanser

This dual action cleanser does more than just wash off dirt and makeup. It pulls double duty by helping to fight the signs of aging skin with alpha lipoic acid, Alpha Hydroxy Acids and DMAE to help lift and contour your skin.

While this cleanser is perfect for those with mature skin, it is also a great preventative measure for those that are not quite there. This Anti-Aging, Paraben-free cleanser increases firmness and treats skin conditions such as large pores, fine lines & wrinkles, helping to smooth out the skin’s surface. I have only used this product a couple of times now, so I cannot really say that I noticed a big difference in regards to my pores being less noticeable or my wrinkles smoothing away just yet. But I did notice that my skin appeared to be brighter and tighter after just a few uses. I intend to continue using it and hopefully these results will begin to become even more noticeable after time. As the saying goes (or as Nelson sings)…”only time will tell

What I can tell now, is that it doesn’t leave you with the feeling of dry skin and a little bit goes a long way. Oh, and if you love the smell of a fresh bathed baby (you know the smell I’m talking about), then you will love the smell of this cleanser. Like a mixture of clean skin, freshly shampood hair and baby powder… so fresh.  It brings joy to me just to smell it!

This is a great product to choose for your Beautyfix kit if you are looking for a dual action cleanser that does more than wash your mascara away. Let’s face it, the more a product can do, the better (that’s my motto anyway) Give it a shot and tell us what you think!

Spring Clean Your Beauty Regime

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Spring is here which means it’s time for a little spring cleaning and makeup and skin care products should not be excluded from this task. Being aware of your makeup expiration is important. It is always a wise idea to make sure you are changing out your beauty products every few months and throwing away the old ones so that you do not get any skin irritations or infections from the bacteria that can collect in old makeup. Unopened cosmetics and new makeup products can remain stable for a couple of years at room temperature, but once you bring a product home and open it, the clock starts ticking.

Here are some of my must have items that I will be replacing and/or renewing for spring time:

Mascara: If you have been using an opened mascara for longer than 3 months, it is time to toss it. Not only will it be dried up and you won’t get the same results that you would with a fresh tube, but bacteria and germs can collect on the brush causing eye irritations and infections. Mascara is a staple beauty product for me, so I like to replace this product every few months and try out different kinds (There are so many good choices)!

Tinted Moisturizer: Moisturizers and other skin care products should be changed out every six months. I always try to keep just one moisturizer open at a time, along with one serum. When I do this I usually end up using all of the product before it would need to be disposed of. I’m loving the tinted moisturizers, not only for Spring, but anytime! Not only are they light and extremely convenient with flawless coverage, but they also provide a perfect sun-kissed glow all-year round!

LipStick: Lipsticks can last a good two years pending on how often you use them. They do dry out with age, so that is a good sign that it is time to replace. Some lipstick shades I’m looking forward to wearing this Spring include coral-reds and a range of pinks (pink is always feminine and sexy regardless of the shade).

Exfoliator: I use exfoliator on a regular basis (2-3 times/week) so I usually end up using the full amount before it would ever go bad. You would be able to notice when an exfoliator goes bad because it would most likely dry up and not be beneficial for your skin. Exfoliating is a great step to work into your beauty routine as it flakes off the dead skin and brings new life to your complexion.

What are some makeup and skin care products you will be renewing for Spring?

By Jenna

Don’t let the info on the bottle fool you. Belli skin care is a luxurious skin care line formulated for expecting and new mothers and anyone who’s wanting a good skin pampering. They combine medically proven treatments with holistic benefits of aroma taste and of course massage. Belli Skin Care is physician-formulated and tested for prenatal safety but their amazing formulations can benefit anyone. In this season’s kit, like OB-GYNs and mothers, we’ve fallen in love with their All Day Moisture Body Lotion.

The first reason I fell in love with this hand and body lotion is the smell. The smell is heavenly, lemony fresh and is present immediately upon application. The citrus scent is lovely, not overpowering or too heavy, but just enough to awaken your senses.

Any body lotion has pass three tests to make my beauty shelf. It has to smell good, rub in well while hydrating and help alleviate dry, itchy skin in any season. Belli’s Body Lotion does all three and more with its non-greasy formula. Its texture is uber buttery and absorbs quickly into your skin while giving you a little glow without the grease, making it all the more luxurious. This moisturizing body lotion is made with Shea butter, chamomile and lemon oil that soothes and hydrates in any weather. This body lotion has been my go-to lotion every day since the weather has changed. Personally,  I find it to be an amazing complement to my morning skin care routine. Pre-warned, tried and Beautyfix tested, this mommy friendly body lotion is a perfect addition to any woman’s beauty cabinet.

Beautyfix Spotlight: Elizabeth Grant Biocallasis Complex Total Regenration Ultimate Cellular Concentrate

Friday, July 1st, 2011

When we look for an anti-aging treatment, generally we just want it to make the wrinkles and pigmentation go away while smoothing away those blemishes with fingers crossed. Elizabeth Grant’s Biocollasis Complex Total Regeneration Ultimate Cellular Concentrate-quite the mouthful- not only does just that in seconds but it has cooling and anti-inflammatory benefits as well, so it’s perfect for summer. Sunburned anyone? Dab this on for instant relief! Since I’ve been using this and putting it to the test I truly believe it to be one of the best anti-aging products on the market.

What’s the scoop on Elizabeth Grant?

Her inspirational story starts in 1948 when her life changed forever. Being a victim of skin damage from World War II and embarrassed by her skin, she discovered a natural substance to treat her war wounds. The wonder ingredient behind Elizabeth Grant’s line is called Torricelumn, which is a form of kelp that can only be picked once a year for optimal results. It’s similar to human plasma and this natural ingredient is unmatched in its ability to delay aging, repair skin and infuse the skin with essential moisture. Each of Elizabeth Grant’s skin care products features this natural ingredient making it available for everyone to reap the benefits.

What I love about Biocallasis Complex Total Regeneration Ultimate Cellular Concentrate is how quickly it penetrates into your skin and its super moisturizing. I’ll be honest I’m a sucker for anything in a glass bottle with a dropper. I noticed an immediate different in my skin after applying the serum. After a few weeks of using it, I also noticed that skin look revived and my blemishes evened out. It genuinely repairs and works as a fantastic anti-aging treatment. If you picked it out in your kit, you’re in for a treat!

glominerals gloSmoky kit: 8 Steps To Master The Smoky Eye Look

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Image: flickr user Bram& Vera

The smoky eye is a great option for getting that mesmerizing look. It adds sex appeal not only to your eyes but your entire face. This trend has become so popular because a smoky eye can change your face dramatically, transforming the girl-next-door into a sultry diva ready for a night on the town. Creating the look is a lot easier than it seems; all you need is a good guide, patience, the right tools and a steady hand.

What you need:
glominerals Glosmoky palette
• Two quality eyeshadow brushes, one large and one small
• A blending brush
• Eyeshadow primer
• 4 Q tips
• A good high-impact VERY black mascara

The trick to creating a smoky eye look is to blend the different layers of makeup as thoroughly as possible. It is also important to invest in some good make-up brushes; they help you achieve a more professional look.

1. Be prepared
Make sure your eyelid is very clean so that your makeup doesn’t get stuck in your crease. Apply primer to help the makeup stay on longer and make your smoky eye appear more vibrant and bold.

2. Pencil me in
Using an eyeliner pencil or liquid liner, trace your lash line to outline your eyelid contour. Always work from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner. For a more dramatic look, line the inner rims of your lower eyelids, too.

3. Crease “wow” factor

Using your glominerals glo smoky palette, select the semi-matte gray shadow and apply it over your entire lid, taking the small makeup brush from your lash line to your brow bone. Trace along your crease and eye socket as well. Take the bigger eye shadow brush and blend color softly.

4. Bring on the smoke
Using the smaller eye shadow brush, start blending the semi-matte gray-black shadow in at your upper lash line and continue to blend upwards. Your eyeliner should disappear under the shadow, or at least be barely visible. Stop applying the dark color when it reaches the crease of your eyelid. Repeat this toward the outer corner of your eye to continue to create a dramatic effect.

5. Let there be light!
Apply highlighter shadow—the shimmering golden champagne shade—directly underneath your brow and onto brow bone. This will accentuate the highest point on your face—by doing this you are bringing out your facial features.

6. Make a clean sweep
Sweep under your eyes with a powder brush or q-tip to get rid of excess eye shadow.
Apply concealer under your eyes AFTER you’ve finished your smoky eye. This will keep “fallout” eye shadow from getting trapped under your eye making you look like a raccoon. Raccoon eye is just not sexy.

7. Finishing touches
Apply a generous amount of mascara to make sure that your lashes stand out, but don’t apply too much. You don’t want clumps! Two coats of volumizing mascara should do the trick.

8.Avoid overdoing it

Remember, when you’re creating an intense eye look like this you have to play down your lips. A light lip gloss or nude lipstick will complement your hot new look perfectly.

Beautyfix Selection: Philip B. Katira Hair Masque

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

image: flickr user LatinaPower2009

“Why a masque for my hair?” you ask. Well, a little deep conditioning treatment, used from time to time or even a few times a week, depending on the condition of your hair, can go a long way in making sure all your hair days are good ones. Particularly if you process your hair or use heat styling tools, think of these nourishing, hydrating hair masques as a staple in your beauty routine … just like your favorite facial masque.

Many of you lucky Beautyfix subscribers received Philip B’s Katira Hair Masque in your season 10 kit. This rich, luxurious treatment is fabulous when it comes to giving damaged hair a pick-me-up! I love how incredibly healthy and shiny it leaves my hair. And it works quickly! In a pinch, I comb the hair masque through in the shower and rinse it right out after just a couple of minutes. However, if you’ve got some extra time, why not apply the product to damp hair and wrap it up with some saran wrap, or a shower cap? The heat from your head will help the hair masque really penetrate and work its magic. Think about it—when you’re at the salon and color is processing, chances are your stylist has you sit under a heater to speed the process along. Same principle.

Have you given it the Katira hair masque a try yet? Do you love it?

Fighting Father Time: Replenix to the Rescue

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Generally, I love the month of May- it’s my birth month! However, this year I am not so excited about May’s arrival because, well, it’s my birth month.  I’ve always been a slightly obnoxious birthday person (you know my type, our birthdays last the whole month, we insist on multiple dinners and use our birthdays as an excuse for everything possible all month long). Sadly, I’m getting to the age where the excitement dwindles and I would gladly forego every birthday dinner in exchange for turning the clock back. I’ve always heard rumors of slowed metabolism, dark eye circles, wrinkles and dull and sagging skin due to age. Unfortunately, I’m learning that they aren’t myths and my upcoming birthday is accompanied by a slight skin related freak-out. After considering Botox and deciding against it for the moment, I turned to my oh-so-knowledgeable co-workers for their guidance. They informed me that an effective anti aging skin care regimen could do wonders for preventing wrinkles and overall signs of aging. They recommended I try a few products from Replenix, which is derived from green tea and composed of 90% polyphenol isolates.

I have begun using these products once a day, at night before I go to bed. First, I apply Replenix Retinol Smoothing Serum 3X. The lightweight facial serum is full of antioxidants and enriched with caffeine.  The serum is designed to boost radiance, neutralize free radicals and lift sagging skin. This product absorbs really quickly and by applying first, it allows the serum to soak for a minute.

Next, I apply Replenix Eye Cream. This advanced age-defying cream is formulated with 90% green tea polyphenols to neutralize free radicals and vitamin K to tame dark circles. I especially love the cooling cucumber, which soothes the eye area.

Lastly, I use Replenix Power of Three Cream, a multi-tasking cream with green tea extract- the equivalent of 500 cups of tea! The caffeine does an excellent job firming, coupled with all the free- radical fighting antioxidants; make the skin not only feel better but look visibly brighter!

Even though I am getting older, my skin is starting to look younger thanks to this anti aging skin care regimen.

Beautyfix Spotlight: Spice Island Body Butter: Passion Fruit

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

A basic law of beauty is that everyone, no matter the skin type, should moisturize. The fact is, moisturizers are beneficial to your skin health and can actually save your skin. Moisturizers can protect sensitive skin, improve skin tone and texture, and mask imperfections. When you have tight skin, it is telling you that it needs moisture. So how do you know when to reach for soothing lotion or a thicker body butter? Body Butters are ideal for skin damaged by dryness, wind or chapping. Body butter will provide superior, longer-lasting emollients, making it the choice when dry skin also needs intense moisture and healing. The most effective way to moisturize your skin is to use a product that contains humectants, or emollient ingredients.

Spice Island Body Butter is an emollient body cream with natural healers and skin-softeners, available in Passion Fruit and Lemongrass. I had the pleasure to try out the Passion Fruit, which is packed with antioxidants, linoleic acid and flavonoids, essential in skin health and protection. Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid that must be consumed for proper health. Flavonoids are antioxidant rich and some also have anti-allergic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. Not only does this body butter smell amazing, but it absorbs quickly and is extremely hydrating. It contains nourishing jojoba oil, which is theorized to be so similar to human skin oil, it can “trick” the skin into thinking it has produced enough oil and thus balance oil production. Virgin coconut oil and olive oils are also used in Spice Island Body Butter, both of which help smooth skin, producing a glowing, supple appearance. Virgin coconut oil is the best natural ingredient for skin lotion available. It prevents free-radical damage and provides protection against them. It can help to keep the skin from developing liver spots, and other blemishes caused by aging and over exposure to sunlight. It also helps fight against sagging and wrinkling skin and aids in healing and repairing the skin which can help bring back a youthful appearance. I’m spending my weekend outdoors by the pool this weekend and I will most definitely be taking my Spice Island Body Butter with me. It will feel great to hydrate my skin with this lotion at the end of the day after spending so much time in the sun. I know that it will absorb quickly, heal and quench my dry skin and leave me smelling like a tropical paradise!
