Wrinkles Beware: Meet Your Match – Ms. Anti-Aging Serum

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

You’ve got the super thick moisturizer to cure that dry skin during this season, but you’ve noticed that something has been missing. Where are these new lines on my forehead coming from?! Settle down Sally, it’s not the end of the world. In fact there are quite a few things we can do to help stay a perfect beauty besides go under the knife or to the needles. (I know sometimes that seems like the best choice because it’s easy.) Using really good anti-aging serums along with your favorite moisturizer can work wonders for your skin tone, elasticity and those itsy-bitsy fine lines. Lucky for you, I’ve scoured the world for the best serums money can buy, so you don’t have to do all the hard work or spend a ridiculous amount of money. Your skin will thank me for it I promise.

What is a serum? A serum usually consists of a thinner consistency than a cream but not completely liquid. It was created for the purpose of delivering ingredients to the skin that most often, a cream or other products cannot do. The molecules are made to be smaller and use different delivery system-methods to have the product penetrate deeper into the skin. Serums can help prevent, and repair wrinkles and is recommended to be applied under sunscreen or a moisturizer. Common ingredients in anti-aging serums are usually peptides, antioxidants, vitamin C and sometimes retinol. The effectiveness of the ingredients in the serum may vary and not all serums have been clinically proven. They can also boost collagen and elastin production, which can decrease the appearance of wrinkles. After trying a slew of them, which ones do I like the best?

Peter Thomas Roth’s Un-Wrinkle definitely does what it says. It UN-WRINKLES. This hasn’t been the first time using this product for me. When I was working back as an esthetician in the Stone Age, I’d add a few drops of this little bad boy in my facial treatments to give them the wow factor when they walked out and looked in the mirror. This serum can be used on all skin types and uses a 23% blend of neuropeptides and peptides. This can help reduce the appearance of deeper wrinkles, fine lines, expression lines etc. Not to mention your skin looks fantastic almost immediately after using it. They do tend to call it “Botox in a bottle” because of the unique ingredients it uses which is my favorite part. It uses 4% SYN-AKE and 10% SNAP-8 that are pain-free synthetic ingredients that mimic snake venom and injectibles to target wrinkle formation. This serum also helps boost collagen production, increase firmness and visibly reduce the appearance of wrinkles. I’ve loved this line of anti-aging products so much; I have also bought the Wrinkle Preventer and the Un-Wrinkle eye cream.

Since sometimes serums can have a lot of artificial ingredients and fillers in them, it’s good to try out something on the natural and organic side once in a while. One of my favorite hydrating serums is John Masters Organics Green Tea and Rose Hydrating Face Serum. This serum has a blend of nourishing certified organic ingredients that focus on the hydration of your skin. At the same time this serum encourages collagen production and stimulates cell turnover leaving your skin radiant and gorgeous after application. It’s also full of antioxidants to nourish your skin and help your complexion. What I love about this is how silky it is on application and it doesn’t interfere with your eye makeup. It leaves your skin dewy and supple. This is perfect for any skin care regimen.

Another that I’ve fallen in love with blindsided me because I personally thought it was too good to be true. At lunch one day talking about my mission of finding the fountain of youth, my friend had recommended I try iQ Derma’s SkinTensive xCel serum day and night to help me with my lovely fine lines. They offer a free trial and focus on anti-aging formulas made with “intelligent ingredients.” After using for about 3 days morning and night I was astonished to see the results even after the first day. It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and it really shows. I feel like those lines of mine are diminishing faster and faster, not to mention my sun spots have been evened out quite a bit, which was an added bonus. Since using this, my wrinkles have improved and it’s more radiant than ever. When applying you don’t have to use much, so you don’t feel like you’re wasting product and it glides on evenly not interfering with makeup either. I’ll be using this one for a while.

When on your own search for that perfect anti-aging miracle serum, just remember that samples can be your best friend and don’t be afraid to branch out and try new brands! Not every product is meant for every skin type but I highly recommend using a serum under your moisturizer ever day. It’s great for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and it’s amazing for prevention. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Holiday beauty tips: Keeping your makeup fresh for the holiday parties

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Oh ‘tis the season to celebrate and yes you have to look good and put your best foot forward (gotta impress that boss you know). Looking fresh and keeping your makeup updated for the holidays can be sometimes a little tough to keep up with. Holiday beauty can be trendy or classic, but either way you may end up eating, drinking and staying out until the wee hours of the morning. How can we keep your makeup fresh you ask? There are a few simple holiday beauty tricks and tips to keep your look beautiful all night long.

Use a lip stain to keep your lips plump and perfect. Benefit has a solid stain for your lips and cheeks, called Benetint and comes in a seductive rose or poppy pink. You can have a drink and not worry about anything on the glass and it’s totally kiss-proof. This rosey jar of liquid gives you a perfect flushed color to accompany you through the parties without any worry of fading or fumbling. Not only is it a good lip stain but you can use it on your cheeks too. Feel free to find one that suits you the best Urban Decay’s Lip Envy is another good one to use.

I’m a firm believer of Skindinavia’s makeup finishing spray and have fallen in love with their No More Shine Makeup Finishing spray. This spray gives a matte finish to your look, helps control shine and excess oil (for when you overheat a little bit), helps reduce the appearance of smudging, creasing and makeup slippage and also saves up to 50% of makeup usage. No re-applying! I can’t leave the house without putting on these sprays and not to forget about the rest of the finishing sprays they have to offer for any event or occasion. Not having to check my makeup constantly is a win-win situation.

For your eyes, you can use liquid eyeliner or a cream eyeliner that’ll stay for hours and hours. It’s very easy to apply a classic cat-eye look or just line the basics. Paired with the finishing spray you’re good to go through the night and you don’t ever have to worry about re-applying or touch ups.

There you have it, some eyes, lips and face tips that’ll get stuck on you for the duration of the party. Just don’t indulge too much you’ll still have to carry yourself like the classy lady you are.

Multipurpose Skin Care and Makeup Products

How many times have you answered the question, “If you were stranded on a desert island, what three beauty products would you bring?” Although in reality, I think the last thing on anyone’s mind are makeup products and skin care when they find themselves washed up on a secluded island, it’s not a bad thing to consider what you should have with you at all times. Whether the island is inhabited by terrifying creatures you thought only lived in the pages of National Geographic, or is just a more real version of your lap top’s breathtaking desktop background, I’m sure beauty care would take a backseat to survival. However, in the less extreme case of being in dire need of a makeup touch up before a last minute date, there are a few products that can do more than what is implied on the label.

Everyone knows the lipstick as blush trick, but what about blush as eyeshadow? Or even lipstick? Many brands are making awesome multipurpose face colors that have a creamy consistency, and a neutral color like Becca’s Beach Tint can usually be used anywhere on the face.

One of the products that I never leave the house without is mascara. If you need a little definition around your eyes, but all you have is mascara, you can put a little dab on your finger or a q-tip and use it as a smudgy liner, or with a steady hand and a little practice, an eyeshadow.

Another product that can be used in more ways than one is eyeshadow. Many times a shocking glance in the rearview mirror leaves me paranoid about being asked about my seven dwarves, so I reach for a medium brown shade for a quick fix bronzer. That same shadow can also be used under lip balm, to give your lips some color too.

If you want to make sure you are always prepared without carrying around a huge makeup bag, a palate like Ready-To-Wear Dual Look Palette, by Tarte is the ultimate answer.  It has everything you need to look stunning when you are pressed for time before an important meeting, or if you find you aren’t quite so deserted on that island after all, and want to make a good impression on that particular muscular native who just gave you the eye from across the sand.

Decleor’s  Aromessence Triple Action Shave Protector Serum is a 100% natural, preservative free treatment serum that will help prepare and protect his skin from shaving, and help to inhibit hair growth. Its sleek design is appealing, and it has hydrating and softening benefits to help the razor glide better while clove essential oil helps slow hair re-growth for a longer lasting shave. BEAUTY NEWS: Estee Lauder giving Prescriptives the boot

Prescriptives

Wow. We were shocked and sad to learn that The Estee Lauder Companies Inc. is shutting down their 30 year old brand Prescriptives as of January 2010. Apparently the mother ship of custom blended foundation – the creator of Colorprinting – hasn’t been carrying its weight. Here’s a little quote that Lauder sent over the Business Wire:

“A core component of The Estée Lauder Companies’ corporate strategy is to evaluate, and where possible, turn around underperforming brands with the goal of improving return on investment. After a thorough analysis of the Prescriptives brand, management concluded that the brand’s long term business model is no longer viable given the current market environment.” See the full statement here.

Prescriptives will always hold a special place in my heart. I did quite a bit of work for them in my makeup artist days – and was thrilled to have a way to perfectly match foundation and concealer instead of sending people home with 3 different shades and hoping they could figure it out once they got home. Prescriptives also went well beyond warm and cool and had a whole system for matching foundation called Colorprinting. They broke skin undertones down into 4 categories – Yellow/Orange, Red/Orange, Red or Blue/Red. The many shade variations were particularly appreciated by people on the extremes of the skin tone spectrum. Personally I was a Y/O, and loved that I could easily jump up and down shades within my tone depending on how pale or tan I was at any given moment.

Magic Powder

Prescriptives was always an innovative brand, and came out with one of the coolest beauty products of all time about a decade ago – Magic Liquid Powder. It’s truly a magical powder that’s approximately 70% water – it feels strangely wet when you put it on, but cooling and amazing all the same. Even better, it makes the skin look wonderful by toning down redness, but without giving a powdery look. This was particularly helpful when I lived in a cold climate and my skin was incredibly dry in the winter. In fact, when I heard the news a few weeks ago, I immediately went online and bought as much of it as I could. Supplies were so low, I wound up getting shipments from 3 different locations. Suddenly I was desperate to get as much of it as I could – a true beauty junkie at work.

Bye-bye Prescriptives, you will be missed.

What’s your most-missed discontinued beauty product?

Beauty tips: Getting the perfect lashes for the perfect eye makeup

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

One of the things that I feel naked without is definitely not wearing any eye makeup. Most importantly, my eyelashes need mascara or some enhancement to that matter and leaving the house without it is a no-no.  After all, having long, beautiful eyelashes is a sign of femininity in most cultures and can make or break your makeup look.  Let’s face it ladies, clumpy mascara is a big beauty DON’T, and having fabulous lashes makes your eyes look a hundred times more amazing than just the norm.  Eyelashes are meant to guard our precious eyes from debris, but of course, we have every reason to beautify them.  In the last decade we’ve seen so many new cosmetics that offer eyelash enhancements and I can’t help but to be excited about many new breakthroughs.  Since there’s more than a few ways to go on getting those lashes longer, fuller and gorgeous, here’s some beauty tips on choosing the right methods to pop your lashes.

Starting out with the newest trend, Latisse (which the fabulous Dr. Cole loves) was introduced earlier this year by Allergen as the first FDA approved prescription treatment for inadequate lashes.  Latisse sets out to growing them longer fuller and darker with full results in 12 to 16 weeks.  Sounds like some sort of amazing right? There are possible side effects that you might want to be warned about. The most common side effect is itching and/or redness that may subside after using the product for a while. Less common side effects include: dryness, eye irritation, redness of the eyelids and darkening of the eyelids, (which have been reported to be reversible after stopping use of Latisse.) These side effects have a very low rate of occurrence, but the results and testimonials show a great outcome.  Since its prescription only, make sure you talk to your doctor to see if this is right for you and the good news is that it’s easy to apply. Here’s a little clip of Dr. Cole sharing his thoughts on Latisse.

We’ve all seen or heard about neuLash and Revitalash or maybe even tried either one.  I know some of my friends rant and rave about it so there’s definitely something to the formula and they have shown the results. These are eyelash conditioners applied once a day on your lash line.  Results can be seen within weeks with longer, fuller eyelashes.  Just be careful not to get it in your eyes, and it’s got a price tag of $150 per tube. I do have to say, I just purchased Jan Marini’s Marini Lash and am so excited to try it, I’ll keep you updated on how it goes.

The next alternative is one I’d have to say that I love.  Eyelash extensions have emerged everywhere and your local Esthetician can take your dull, short lashes and turn them into long, curled, dark, beautiful lashes.  Eyelash extensions are just like hair extensions, synthetic fibers make up the extension, and are placed directly onto your lash with an adhesive bond to extend and create fullness.  This process usually takes about 2 hours for the first application and since your lashes are forever falling out and growing back in, come back from 2-3 weeks for a re-fill and the lash never touches the skin.  This can be a little pricey ranging from $150-$500 for the first application and $40-$100 for fills, so if you’re not willing to keep them up like your manicure, they probably aren’t right for you.  There are more than a few advantages to this method and they look natural and beautiful.  You can swim, run, work out, sleep with them, next to no side effects, and the best part NO MORE MASCARA. You can wake up in the morning and never have to put eye makeup on, the job is done.  Just make sure you go to someone trained and good at the process at your local salon.

They’ve been around forever and one of my personal favorites is the strip lash.  They come in just about every color, length and even some have accessories on them.  For a night out on the town, they’re cheap, easy to apply and (the more natural ones) can make your eyes effortlessly pop for an amazing look.  False eyelashes have been around since the early 20th century, and become evidently popular (think Twiggy) in the 1960’s.  These precious commodities can be found at your local drug store for less than $10 or you can get fancy and get mink ones like J.Lo.  Simple and effective, you can never go wrong with do-it-yourself and it adds a little extra boost of confidence to your look.

There you have it ladies, love yourself and love your lashes, fake or real. Here’s another great blog post about Latisse alternativesWhat have you tried when it comes to primping your lashes?

Xoxo

Beauty Secrets From Around the World

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

My Guatemalan grandmother used to break a piece off of an Aloe Vera plant and then rub the gooey end on a scar she used to have on her hand. She deeply believes in the curative properties of Aloe! She also recommended that I use the same gooey substance on my breakouts. She said the Aloe would help heal them faster. I also have to thank her for introducing me to the Loofa (in Guatemala they are called Pashtes – they grow on the side of the road in certain parts of the country). Ever since then I exfoliate on a daily basis.  These childhood memories made me wonder about what women in other cultures do to stay beautiful. Although I love to travel, I can’t afford to go globetrotting in order to learn all of the beauty secrets this world has to offer. Instead I picked up Shalini Vadhera’s book, Passport to Beauty. She did all the traveling for me – yes, it’s not as exciting as being in Rio or Tokyo but it is faster and I don’t have to sell my car to pay for the trip. Below are some of the secrets I learned.

Being that I exfoliate on a daily basis, I am always looking for new beauty products to help me in my effort and apparently Hawaiian women turn to Sugar when wanting to shed dead skin cells. Raw Sugar is their exfoliant of choice. It’s not only natural but it also has antiseptic properties and is a mild Hydroxy Acid that has been used in skin rejuvenation for centuries. Sugar is also much gentler on the skin than salt since it dissolves quicker. A Sugar body scrub you might want to consider using is the ME! Bath Shower Sherbet. It looks good enough to eat – but please resist the temptation! Our sisters in Brazil rub coarse sand on their bodies to help with cellulite reduction while those in Japan opt for dry brushing. Dry brushing not only exfoliates the skin but also helps with temporary cellulite reduction. (I’ll write more about dry brushing in an upcoming post).

White tea sprinkled with orange tea flowers

One ingredient that has really become popular (and for good reason) in beauty products is White Tea. White Tea is one of the strongest antioxidants in the world and a long-time anti-aging skin care secret for Chinese women – now I see why Chinese women seem to have the most beautiful skin! White Tea also reduces puffiness & increases firmness around the eyes. It is being added to many beauty products such as eye shadows, moisturizers, lip treatments, and many others. The Global Goddess iDivine Eye Shadow is infused with powerful antioxidants from White Tea so you not only get a satiny eye shadow but you also get anti-aging benefits. Another beauty line that is a fan of white tea is Pur-lisse. Jennifer Yen, the creator of Pur-lisse, combines French skincare technology with her grandmother’s Asian beauty recipes. The formulas used in her products feature white tea and blue lotus in order to reverse skin damage caused by every day exposure.

Here’s one for those of you that suffer from brittle nails. In the Dominican Republic women use Garlic to strengthen finger nails. They chop it up and add it to clear nail polish. They let it sit for a week in the bottle and then apply it to their nails as a top coat.

In Thailand Tamarind is used in many beauty routines. In addition to lightening and brightening, it purifies, exfoliates, and cleanses the skin for a radiant look. In many Asian countries, light skin is considered beautiful. The Juara Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner is a must-try for those searching for a quick beauty fix (pun intended) for dull, tired skin.

Last but not least, the ladies in India use almond oil for just about everything! It softens and gets rid of dry skin. It is also used as massage oil for after a shower or bath.

These beauty secrets from around the world are definitely interesting and helpful. I love that in spite of our cultural differences, women in general are all in search of the same thing – beauty!

Do you have a beauty secret you like to share? If so, I’d love to hear it.

Cosmetics: Natural Vs. Organic

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

The Green movement is in full swing and there’s a battle going on with natural cosmetics vs. organic cosmetics.  From cars and houses, to food and makeup, there are a lot of myths circling around that topic.  Since learning more and more about the benefits of going green, I’m more concerned and alert to the marketing terms being used, as well as the ingredients that my makeup contains.  Consumers are jumping at the products that are labeled natural and organic, and it’s very easy to get confused and sucked into an advertisement that we think is eco-friendly.  The good news is that we have plenty of resources available to recognize who’s telling the truth and who’s trying to just sell a product.  But how can you tell which beauty products are truly natural or organic?

The word “natural” is being used EVERYWHERE and newsflash: it doesn’t necessarily mean anything good and it doesn’t have to.  From a marketer’s standpoint this word is a dream, because you may use it on any label and advertisement and not provide anything to back up why it’s considered natural.  Beware of this word!  So for example, I can take any lipstick and label it all natural and the FDA doesn’t have to do anything about it to validate it. Sounds crazy right?  But it’s true and the FDA doesn’t regulate much.  Actually only about 1% of the FDA’s budget is put towards regulating cosmetics and personal care products.

The word “organic” is also a tricky word.  Cosmetic companies can still use it on labels but buyers beware:  If it’s not certified organic then it may just be a hoax as well.  Thankfully you can recognize it by a logo and by looking at the ingredients list.  The cosmetics can be completely organic or made with organic ingredients and you can recognize those ingredients on the labels.  Here’s a brief guide to the different organic certifications that are out there:

The USDA certified organic seal is meant for the United States, and can be displayed on a product only if it goes by these terms.  Cosmetic companies can say “100% Organic” on the label if: (excluding water and salt) Product must contain only organically produced ingredients.  This happens very rarely with cosmetics and must display the certifying agent’s name and address along with the USDA seal. If it says “Organic”, the product must contain at least 95% organically produced ingredients (excluding water and salt) and they can still use the USDA organic seal with the certifying agent’s name and address.

One of the largest organic certification organizations is ECOCERT.  It conducts inspections in over 80 countries, and certifies food, cosmetics, textiles, and perfumes.  Ecocert is founded on strong ethical values and is accredited by the USDA.  Ecocert mainly regulates Europe and surrounding continents and countries, but its seal is recognized all over the world.

The Australian Certified Organic (ACO) logo is accredited to certify organic operations in Australia, Japan, Europe, USA, Switzerland and the UK.  This ensures that your organic products and systems have the highest integrity and aim for ecologically sustainable practices.

Checking out the “about us” section and “corporate responsibility” can help you figure out what brand is right for you and fits your beliefs.  The cosmetic companies that take the time to get certified are gems, so pay attention!  The next time you’re out of face powder or eye shadow, take a little time to shop around to find what brand fits you the best.

What’s most important to you when choosing makeup? The ingredients, the company or the price?

Do you personally practice any of the “cornerstones to well being”, and if so, which ones?
