Put A Lil Pep In Your Spring Makeup Routine

March 28th, 2013

Ok kiddos, spring has officially sprung and it’s time to face the facts – your boring winter beauty routine is looking tired. So let’s spruce it up a little bit and get a handle on your hotness for the season. If you don’t want to go for a drastic change with something like cutting your hair off like I did, adding a bit of color in the right place will give you that little extra something to stay on top of your game when it comes to spring makeup. Without much ado, here are a few of my favorite spring beauty ideas that will add a little pep in your step.

Transition that gloomy day with a little grey-on your face. One my favorite spring beauty trends of the season is the addition of grey into your wardrobe or into your beauty routine. I think the beauty gurus have suddenly remembered that using a matte grey eye shadow can complement any eye color and be effortlessly chic with any ensemble. Duh—I would’ve loved to have been around for that light bulb moment. Layer Le Metier De Beaute’s True Colour Eye Shaodow in Platinum over your favorite neutral base shadow to get a look that’s glamorous and just a little glistening. I’m also obsessing over Deborah lippmann’s Moon Rendezvous at the moment. It’s a slate grey-blue that’s put me and my nails totally over the moon.

Pastels will always be ever so prevalent in the fashion world for spring. I don’t know about you, but personally, wearing Easter egg colors just for the hell of it isn’t really my thing. My favorite interpretation of the pastel trend is to have a little fun with your eyeliner instead. Luckily, my absolute #1 favorite eyeliner by Stila comes in a few exciting colors for spring so we can create a new look while easily transforming your eyes into show stoppers. No joke and all with a quick swipe. Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Periwinkle, Snow & Turquoise are instant game changers for the season. Get them now or forever hold your peace.

I’ll be honest; summer makes me antsy because SPF pretty much replaces my makeup. So I haven’t felt the need to turn up my eye makeup every day. HOWEVER that doesn’t mean that I have to scare everyone going bare face just yet. My ‘deep fried butter’ of the season is this pairing: Becca’s Beach Tint in Lychee & IT Cosmetic’s Hello Light Crème Illuminizer. It’s my wham-bam, makeup done ma’am duo that’s super easy to apply on the go and can be used almost anywhere. The Crème illuminizer is a life saver! It can actually be used all over my face (trust me honey – it gets used all over) to enhance features and help with any complexion imperfections.

Super easy right? Most importantly, have fun, try new things and never stop smiling. There’s nothing more attractive than a woman with a positive attitude and a glowing smile.

Improve Your Skin Every Time You Cleanse? Yes!

March 26th, 2013

I don’t need to tell you that when something sounds too good to be true … it usually is. I say “usually” because there are definitely exceptions, like the results you can expect when you use Glytone Mild Gel Wash– one of the amazing products featured in this season’s Beautyfix! If you’re looking for a face wash that multitasks, you’ve found it.

Because of its glycolic acid content (which is perfect for everyday use for most skin types, in case you were wondering) this gem safely rids your complexion of dead skin cells as it washes away oil, dirt and makeup. Don’t believe me? A full-fledged expert—board-certified dermatologist Ashley Magovern—is about to school you.

“Glycolic acid is probably my favorite ingredient in skin care,” Dr. Magovern told me. “And if you can incorporate into your routine somehow, whether through a cleanser or a lotion, you will quickly notice your skin looking brighter and fresher, with pores and lines minimized. Glycolic acid has been around since the infancy days of dermatology (even before that) and has long track record with lots of science to support its effectiveness.”

Have you tried Glytone Mild Gel Wash yet? You know the drill—leave a comment and tell us how much you’re loving it!

I Have a Speedo Tan (and what I did about it)

March 22nd, 2013

I committed a major beauty faux pas this past weekend. Like MAJOR. My co-workers are going to lecture me for weeks when they read this blog. I am actually a little nervous to hit the publish button.  What act could possibly be so bad that I wish I could post this under “Anonymous Beauty Blogger”? Drum roll….. I went to a tanning bed….. and used accelerator… and stayed in for the maximum amount of time. I know, I know, I know, I am ashamed and totally regret it and will never, ever condone it.  However, in my defense, I have the most intense Speedo tan! Again, that does not justify my lapse in judgment, but I’m actually embarrassed to go to the pool or beach with friends because it looks like I am wearing two bathing suits- a bikini over a white speedo. Sadly, my terrible decision to risk my health for the sake of even tan lines did not pan out- my tan lines are still severe, just a little more bronzed all over. Sigh.

Lucky for me, I had the pleasure of meeting the amazing Manna Kadar at LA Fashion week. She introduced me to her gorgeous namesake line, Manna Kadar Cosmetics. While all the makeup is stunning and expertly crafted, the one item that stood out to me the most to me was her Bronze Beauty Self-Tanning Lotion.  The paraben free lotion boasts an innovative formula that blends natural ingredients, such as Aloe, Vitamin A and Vitamin E, to create a rich tan without ever putting the skin contact with the damaging rays from the sun (or the tanning bed).

I immediately had visions of a tan-line-free back, so I grabbed a coworker and convinced her to lather me up! I asked her to please concentrate on the lighter sections of my back and only use the lotion sparingly on the already tan areas. Almost immediately, my skin began to darken! As the instructions stated, the color continued to darken over the next three hours. While my tan lines are not completely gone (hello, its self-tanning lotion, not magic potion), they are significantly less severe after just one use! An added bonus? The color is totally natural and there is no funky scent! It is safe to say that I found my savior and will be staying out of the dangerous tanning beds from now on! My coworkers will be so proud :)

Lashes to Die For

March 19th, 2013

The name ‘Lashes to Die For’ is a bit extreme, but I must say this conditioning mascara makes a lasting impression.  One of the many reasons I am a fan of Beautyfix, is because it provides the opportunity to try products I otherwise might not be aware of. My main go-tos in the beauty department are bb cream, mascara and lip gloss so I was quite happy to find that pretty much all 3 were available in this season’s Beautyfix and I couldn’t resist to try a conditioning mascara!

I have very little lashes to work with, so I was eager to try out a product that seems to do it all for your lashes. Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die For Mascara is the best of both worlds. It not only works for grooming purposes but it also nourishes the lashes.

Spring is here and it’s time to ditch the clumped, old mascara and get a fresh tube. Most mascaras contain an antibacterial agent in the formula that protects your eyes from bacteria for around 3-6 months. Your risk of getting an eye infection from old mascara increases the longer you wait to throw it out. Don’t risk it, get a new tube and try something new! This is the perfect lightweight mascara to add to your spring beauty arsenal. With a clump-free application, Peter Thomas Roth mascara enhances your lashes by providing length and protecting lashes from becoming brittle. It creates more of a natural look and actually improves the health of your lashes the more you wear it.

Sound too good, to be true? Why not give it a shot and tell us what you think!

5 Spring Makeover Tips for your Skin Care Products

March 15th, 2013

Spring is the perfect time for a fresh beginning. What better time to get rid of old skin care products that you’ve been using all winter long? Here are a few skin care tips to give your existing beauty arsenal a spring makeover!

  1. A cream-based face cleanser was perfect for the winter months because it kept your skin from becoming parched and feeling like sandpaper. Why not try switching over to a gel-based cleanser now that the snow has melted? The light texture and refreshing feel on your complexion works just as good to get rid of dirt, oil and makeup without disrupting your skin’s moisture barrier.
  2. Toss that greasy petroleum jelly or lotion you’ve been lathering on your feet all winter long and grab a moisturizing and revitalizing foot scrub to prep your feet for sandals. After a long winter in boots, your feet can use a little pampering with an invigorating treatment infused with peppermint oil, such as Bliss Foot Patrol.
  3. Some of us may have skipped using a moisturizer with SPF protection during the winter months because the sun may not have been out as much. Now is the time to update your facial moisturizer to include SPF protection.  As the days grow and we are exposed to the sun a little more, a day moisturizer with an SPF of 15 and above is great to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
  4.  If you want to update your makeup foundation with a multi-use product that acts as a foundation, moisturizer, sun protector and anti-aging product, a BB cream is the perfect solution for your skin.  dr. brandt  Flaws No More Flexitone BB Cream SPF 30 is a formula  that features Flexitone technology, which adjusts to your skin tone to create a custom color that blends seamlessly with your skin while helping your complexion stay smooth, hydrated and youthful.
  5. Soothe dry skin and lips, redness, treat zits, bug bites and even reduce the appearance of wrinkles—all you need is emu oil! This handy product can replace tons of products you’ve been lugging around all winter trying to keep your skin in pristine condition. It’s instantly absorbed by the skin and won’t clog pores or leave a greasy finish. Dremu has this dream oil available in a 1 oz. and 2 oz. container, to keep handy at your desk or inside your purse.

A big hair day is never a bad hair day

March 13th, 2013

Dolly Parton’s was platinum, Nicki Minaj’s was a rainbow, Pam Anderson’s was bouncing on the beach and Snooki’s was wilder than an untamed gorilla… but what did they all have in common? Their big bouffant hair of course! Well, toss your teasing combs ladies because Nick Chavez is back in the upcoming season of BeautyFix to bring us all up to this ever-desired bombshell hair level (literally, sky scraper heights)!

After years and years of bleach, dye, heat, distress, snags, weathering, teasing, etc. my poor mane is lifeless, thin and boring. This is why I am ecstatic to hear that Hollywood hair stylist, Nick Chavez is bringing one of his best products in the Advanced Plump ‘N Thick Collection to BeautyFix. These Advanced Plump ‘N Thick products are the absolute answer to our dilemma of lifeless locks in desperate need of high performance products. There are three products in the collection, the Advanced Plump ‘N Thick Shampoo, Conditioner and Styling Mist. Let me tell you – after using them all, my strands have been as thick and voluminous as Carrie Bradshaw’s pony that basically swallows up the streets of NYC as a snack.

The Advanced Plump ‘N Thick Thickening Styling Mist is probably the most effective and efficient product in the collection, as it can be used on wet or dry hair. As long as you follow up with a little heat from the blow dryer, your hair is going to look extremely full and healthy – almost as if the past ten years of damage and thinning has been completely erased. The Mist is light and fresh so it doesn’t weigh your hair down making you compromise volume for thickness.  It is actually formulated with an ingredient called Ampli-filler which strengthens strands and plumps them up with collagen! (Kind of like the aforementioned female celebrities? Just kidding. Sort of.)

Get ready to swing your own Nick Chavez Advanced Plump ‘N Thick Thickening Styling Mist in your BeautyFix bag to achieve the thickness of Nicki’s coif or plumpness of Snooki’s pouf! I am pretty excited about it… can you tell? FIST PUMP! Or should I say PLUMP?!

Beautyfix 18 – Prime, Plump & Perfect Your Natural Beauty

March 7th, 2013

Spring is a time for rejuvenation, and accordingly, the upcoming season of Beautyfix is all about enhancing your natural beauty. Get excited, because these new picks are perfect for those of us looking to reclaim our tired, winter-worn skin and revamp our limp hair!

By Prime I really mean: repair, even skin tone, firm and moisturize! Yes, this is the list of skin-perfecting tasks Juice Beauty’s Stem Cellular Repair CC Cream performs. This cream works great alone when I am in a hurry but I love it topped with pressed powder for a more finished look.

In DermStore’s most recent catalogue: The Magazine (Spring 2013) I already claimed my favorite styling product as Nick Chavez’s Advanced Plump ‘N Thick Thickening Styling Mist. I love this product because unlike other volumizing products I have used, this styling mist works from root to ends and really increases all over volume and body instead of just at the root.

The Zensation Super Rich Repairing Mask is like a restart button for your face. This mask is amazing, as it contains key ingredients like shea butter, saccharide isomerate and masterwort extract, and lavender essential oil. I use the mask weekly (sometimes more) and I love it leaves my face baby soft.

With Beautyfix 18 launching in a matter of days, I am excited to try B. Kamins Nia-Stem Moisturizer KX (because I love their BB Cream), and Denise Richards by Christophe Volumizing Spray (because I love their Volumizing Shampoo). Which products will you pick for your new Beautyfix?

No More Dark Spots!

March 6th, 2013

Thanks to my mother’s genes, I never had to suffer from acne breakouts, even during the peak of my puberty, when all my peers would spend half their waking hours pricking and prying on their zits. I on the other hand would feel horrified if I even get 1 or 2 around the chin area once every few months. What my skin is prone to, however, is something that no amount of pricking and prying can cure, even temporarily—and that is skin discoloration.

Blemish marks, brown spots, freckles, darkened areas—yeah, I have all of them. Sometimes, depending on the season, I would get a huge white patch at center of my forehead (of all places!). I can’t recall how many drugstore creams I used to treat my pigmented skin, only to find out that to address this issue, I had to know what’s causing it.

Few of the major causes of uneven skin tone are sun damage, acne scars, dry and flaky skin, hormonal changes, medication reactions and medical conditions. Once you know what’s causing the discoloration, you can now start deciding on your next course of action. As for me, it’s years of UV exposure. I must admit I wasn’t very adamant about the use of sunscreen until a year ago. So aside from applying sunscreen (and re-applying every 2 hours) every day, I’ve also started using exfoliating cleansers with glycolic or lactic acid in it to buff away the darkened layers of my skin. And to help hasten the process, I’ve also started using Sonya Dakar Hydrasoft Lotion – Discoloration as my moisturizer.

This hydrating cream doesn’t just smell so good and refreshing, it also feels super cool on the skin because it uses eucalyptus as its main ingredient. According to my research, eucalyptus oil has been used for centuries by aborigine ethnic groups to treat everything—from wounds and insect bites to asthma, sinus infections and colds to headaches, fever, inflammation and muscle aches. Today, several skin ointments contain eucalyptus oil because of its antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-parasitic qualities. It soothes burns and blisters, calms skin rashes and irritations, and treats acne, eczema and insect bites. It also cleanses the skin, clears blackheads and blemishes and evens out uneven skin tones.

Aside from these eucalyptus oil benefits, Hydrasoft Lotion also contains ceramides and vitamin E to hydrate the skin without the greasy feel, neutralize free radical damage and rebalance the skin’s pH level.

Thanks to today’s advanced products, skin discoloration can be easily treated even without going to your skin doctor. But remember, some discolored patches are not as harmless as it looks. Always keep an eye out for changes in shape, size and color as it could be a warning sign for cancer. Lastly, in case I haven’t mentioned this enough: NEVER forget to apply sunscreen!

It’s SUPERHAPPYFUNTIME! PMSing At The Office – You And Your Skin

March 1st, 2013

There’s a theory—which I would say is proven—that when a female spends a lot of time in close quarters with other females, they all end up on the same cycle. With that said, on days like today, I feel extremely bad for all of our men here in the office. They are surrounded by women working at a beauty company Every. Single. Day. With all of us guwils being under a certain age, it can happen at any moment, strike at any time and blindside anyone within 10 feet at any hour or day of the year. This got me wondering, as my face is feeling like the Sahara, aside from the obvious emotional changes, what kind of effect does a menstrual cycle and PMS have on our skin? Are we OOZING it through our pores? Is my yelling across the office not enough of a red flag? Well my dear, hormones play a huge role in how your skin works. Here are the facts:

Not only are you more sensitive emotionally, (‘But you didn’t say it like you meant it!’) your skin is more sensitive when you’re PMSing, right down to your fingernails. When estrogen levels drop, your skin loses that precious substance called water, so it dries out and is more susceptible to touch and irritation. If you’re wondering why that manicure wasn’t so pampering this week, now you have the answer my friend.

You want the bad news or the bad news? Ready or not, the fat layer in your skin is thickest during that time of the month. That bloating is really there, by about 7% in your abs and about 4% on your thighs! Feel terrible enough yet? Scientific studies could attribute this to water retention, so keep this in mind when you want to scarf down those Cheetos slathered in nacho cheese and topped with kosher salt.

Your skin can be at its driest during your period. When estrogen levels are at their peak about 1 day before it starts, your pores will be at their smallest. It’s simple: Estrogen suppresses sebum production; therefore your skin will be less oily than normal. However, when your estrogen levels drop a week before your period, your oil glands are at their most active. Buckle up.

So kids, the solution to this is to hoard as many beauty products as possible and lock yourself in a closet with a bottle of wine and a plate of pasta. Just don’t go out in public at all. Be prepared for anything and take no prisoners. (I’m kidding.)

Since the prevalence of PMS is estimated to be between 3% – 30%, we asked the men in our office for their tips for coping with a female co-worker on their cycle. Survey says:

  1.  You see a purse being carried to the restroom – Just stay away. “If I bought cookies for every girl in here every time they were PMSing, I would be broke.’
  2.  Avoid disagreeing and extended conversations. ‘Little snippets of acute aggression followed by a slouched lack-luster look – Back away slowly.’
  3.  Keep calm and collected. ‘If you are dealing with someone that’s being difficult just keep an even head and be nice to people. Creating any arguments at work is never good.’
  4.  Just stay away.

What do you mean they are out of donuts?!

To this, I bid you adieu and God speed.

Beautyfix Pick: SkinMedica Tri-Retinol Complex

February 26th, 2013

By now, I’m sure you ALL know the number-one rule for healthy skin that looks as young as possible: daily sunscreen. But did you know that regular use of a vitamin A derivative—assuming your skin is not super sensitive and can comfortably tolerate it—is not too far behind? Seldom are skin care ingredients proven time and time again to be effective at creating change and improvement, but vitamin A in all its anti-aging forms—retinol, Retin-A, etc—is. NOTHING not involving scalpels, needles or lasers that comes in a tube will actually reduce the look of the wrinkles you experience as you age quite like these wonder ingredients. Most dermatologists and estheticians will emphatically confirm this truth, too.

If you’ve never tried any kind of anti-aging product containing retinol, you are in luck, as this season’s Beautyfix kit features a travel-size version of SkinMedica’s Tri-Retinol Complex, which is, in my opinion, one of the best non-prescription retinoids out there. Used a couple times a week, ever other night, or even every night depending on how your skin handles it, this formulation speeds up cell regeneration, a vital process that slows with age. The result? Simply put, better skin. Commit to using this regularly and over time you will notice fewer wrinkles, fewer spots, an improvement in texture and an increase in firmness.

Did you receive SkinMedica Tri-Retinol Complex in your Beautyfix kit? What did you think about it?
