Beyond Addictive – jane iredale’s Lip Drink

Tuesday, April 30th, 2013

At any given time of the year I can guarantee that a woman will have at least 3 lip balms in her possession. Mind you, that is a really conservative number. The range usually consists of our favorite chapstick that we must have within reach at all times, the one we thought was cute at the register that isn’t always your first choice and the one you had wanted to try or had recommended for you but are very meh about it. Then there are the others. The ones you’ve forgotten about, the one you have randomly in your car, the one in your purse, the one in your bathroom and the one you stole from your boyfriend. If you had chosen correctly this season, you can forget about every other lip moisturizer on the planet. That’s right, jane iredale’s Lip Drink is the holy grail of all lip balms.

Not only does it offer SPF protection, but it quenches your lips and invigorates your senses. How could it possibly surpass all others? It’s packed with all natural, good-for-your-lips ingredients like, avocado and carrot oils, lotus extract and lemon peel oil to help deeply nourish and heal your parched and irritated lips.

It’s extremely luxurious and that’s why I absolutely love this lip conditioner. It glides on so smooth and has the most deliciously light citrus-lemon scent. I suffer from chronically chapped lips no matter the weather and jane iredale’s Lip Drink has helped them make a full recovery. Aside from the ingredient perfection, the tube is top notch in the looks department and can hold its own against rival designer tubes. It also works well with different lipstick formulas. I can apply a thin layer of this lip moisturizer before my favorite lipstick and it really enhances the lipstick color. Needless to say, I’m addicted. If you were smart enough to swipe one of these in your last Beautyfix you’re well on your way to sheer indulgence.

Put A Lil Pep In Your Spring Makeup Routine

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

Ok kiddos, spring has officially sprung and it’s time to face the facts – your boring winter beauty routine is looking tired. So let’s spruce it up a little bit and get a handle on your hotness for the season. If you don’t want to go for a drastic change with something like cutting your hair off like I did, adding a bit of color in the right place will give you that little extra something to stay on top of your game when it comes to spring makeup. Without much ado, here are a few of my favorite spring beauty ideas that will add a little pep in your step.

Transition that gloomy day with a little grey-on your face. One my favorite spring beauty trends of the season is the addition of grey into your wardrobe or into your beauty routine. I think the beauty gurus have suddenly remembered that using a matte grey eye shadow can complement any eye color and be effortlessly chic with any ensemble. Duh—I would’ve loved to have been around for that light bulb moment. Layer Le Metier De Beaute’s True Colour Eye Shaodow in Platinum over your favorite neutral base shadow to get a look that’s glamorous and just a little glistening. I’m also obsessing over Deborah lippmann’s Moon Rendezvous at the moment. It’s a slate grey-blue that’s put me and my nails totally over the moon.

Pastels will always be ever so prevalent in the fashion world for spring. I don’t know about you, but personally, wearing Easter egg colors just for the hell of it isn’t really my thing. My favorite interpretation of the pastel trend is to have a little fun with your eyeliner instead. Luckily, my absolute #1 favorite eyeliner by Stila comes in a few exciting colors for spring so we can create a new look while easily transforming your eyes into show stoppers. No joke and all with a quick swipe. Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Periwinkle, Snow & Turquoise are instant game changers for the season. Get them now or forever hold your peace.

I’ll be honest; summer makes me antsy because SPF pretty much replaces my makeup. So I haven’t felt the need to turn up my eye makeup every day. HOWEVER that doesn’t mean that I have to scare everyone going bare face just yet. My ‘deep fried butter’ of the season is this pairing: Becca’s Beach Tint in Lychee & IT Cosmetic’s Hello Light Crème Illuminizer. It’s my wham-bam, makeup done ma’am duo that’s super easy to apply on the go and can be used almost anywhere. The Crème illuminizer is a life saver! It can actually be used all over my face (trust me honey – it gets used all over) to enhance features and help with any complexion imperfections.

Super easy right? Most importantly, have fun, try new things and never stop smiling. There’s nothing more attractive than a woman with a positive attitude and a glowing smile.

Move Over Emerald, Amethyst Has Arrived

Friday, February 1st, 2013

Let’s face it, a lot of shimmery eyeliner pencils can only be a mess. The color fades or smears down your eye, the glitter can be too harsh and you end up being disappointed overall and more money has gone to waste. That pencil will then be shelved away only to make an appearance 3 years later when you’re cleaning out your excess makeup bag inventory. Not this time beauty junkies, not with Pencil Me In Cosmetics’ Eye Accent Pencil. It’s the perfect eye pencil when you’re in need of a little pop.

I loved how smoothly this pencil glides on with just the right amount of color and shimmer. Not too drag queen and not heavy, the shimmer wasn’t too much to make my eyes bug out. We’ve all seen that unfortunate look right? This soft plum is pigmented enough to create a dramatic makeup look or something subtle just to make your eyes stand out. Instead of opting for my trendy emerald green eye pencil, I’ve been using this on my lower lash line for that extra touch to bring out the green in my eyes. Along with lasting throughout the day, purple passion is versatile enough to complement any eye color.

As much as I love this pencil, I do need to forewarn my fellow Beautyfix lovers. After opening the plastic on this one, make sure that you sharpen the pencil once more to shave away any hardness. The pencil will be smooth thereafter and you’re ready for use! By the way, how amazing is the cap/sharpener that comes with it?

Beautyfix tested tried and true, it’s absolutely perfect for an unexpected dash of eye color without screaming desperate for attention. How could you go wrong?

How to Wear Rose Gold

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013

In metallurgy, rose gold is a mixture of gold, copper and a little bit of silver. In fashion, it’s the kind of bling that you can wear any way, from dressy to casual. It’s feminine, romantic and sophisticated. It’s more relaxed than diamonds, more refined than silver and more discreet than yellow gold. It transforms the laidback into elegant. Not to mention, it flatters all skin tones.  In fact, it’s this versatile quality that makes it a huge hit even in beauty. The blend of warm gold tones with cool pink ones makes rose gold makeup a one-shade-fits-all hue.

Not sure how to rock this shade? Take your cue from Vera Wang’s Spring 2013 show. Makeup artist Lucia Pieroni achieved that beautiful rosy glow by sweeping gold shadow over the lid, brown shadow on the crease and smudging bronze under the eye. Even better—you too can replicate the results using only one product: jane iredale 24 Karat Gold Dust in Rose Gold. This powder, which contains real, food grade 24-Karat gold flakes, is already the perfect rose gold shade, so you don’t have to mix different shades of gold and copper to get the color you want. What’s more, this product can be applied literally anywhere on your body! Here are some ideas:

1. On Eyes: Sweep over your lids alone or with your favorite neutral eyeshadow to glamorize a nude look.

2. On Cheeks: Sweep on top of your bronzer onto the apples of your cheeks and your temples to add warmth to your complexion during fall and winter.

 3. On Cheeks: Brush as a standalone blush on the apples of your cheeks to add color and highlight your cheekbones in one go. This shade works well with summer whites and dainty spring florals.

4.  On Lips: Sweep over your lip gloss for a subtle color and sparkle.

 5. On Your Face: Apply as a highlighter or finishing powder over your foundation on your cheeks, forehead and chin to brighten your skin and lend your face a beautiful glow.

 6. On the body: Apply on your neck, décolletage, back and arms for a sexy shimmer.

Skylark’s Pretty Pigmented Lipgloss Duo

Thursday, January 10th, 2013

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Elle & Blair Fowler, it’s time to get acquainted. Two of youtube’s biggest beauty vloggers, (Elle- allthatglitters21) (Blair- juicystar07), garnering more than 150 million video veiws and counting, recently created Skylark, a range of products that reflect their passion for beauty. They kicked off their launch with the Ava and Sophia Lipgloss duo, currently available in this season’s Beautyfix!

Skylark is unique in that each product within this line launches as it is perfected. Every product is made with the highest quality and approved with confidence by Elle & Blair. Named after the main characters in their debut novel ‘Beneath The Glitter’, “Ava”  is a cotton candy pink gloss and “Sophia” is a gorgeous dark berry shade with micro-glitters.  My personal favroite is Sophia. I love the super pigmented color! This is now my go-to gloss for everyday wear. It is so complementary and has a flattened brush for easier and a more accurate application. Ava is a bit to light for me on it’s own, however it makes a great addition to any lipstick color and gives your lips the perfect amount of shine when paired up with another color. Both of these glosses have a nice texture and goes on smoothly and both are proof that these girls know what their doing in the beauty department.

Watch this video to learn more about Skylark and see how they have worked to perfect this beautiful lipgloss duo!

Beauty Resolutions

Thursday, December 27th, 2012

Another year, another New Year’s resolution to make and break. I’m not one to make excuses for my minor misdemeanors, but let’s face it, life happens—and with it comes all kinds of impediments that make following the rules impractical. So to break the cycle this year, I’ve decided to stop making grand promises that I can’t keep and start streamlining my beauty resolutions to make it more…well, feasible.

1.       Wake up 10 minutes earlier.

Mornings usually find me scrambling around like a lost puppy, leaving me no time to dry my hair thoroughly—let alone, put proper makeup on! So this year, I promise to add 10 minutes to my waking moments so I could groom myself accordingly before facing the world.

Here’s the plan:

2 minutes – After cleansing, apply moisturizer, sunblock, lip balm and foundation and eye primers.

3 minutes – Partially dry my hair.

2 minutes – Apply foundation, eye makeup (shadow and liner), blush and lip color

2 minutes – Continue drying my hair.

1 minute – Curl my lashes, apply a coat of mascara and lip gloss. Finish with a pump of hair serum applied at the ends of my hair.

(For more 5-minute makeup ideas, click here.)

2.       Declutter.

Hoarding has always been one of my worst traits. I tend to hold on to things: post cards I snagged from museums, newspaper issues bearing important events, movie tickets, parking receipts, Starbucks napkins, clothes I’ll one day wear, and yes, makeup products from eons ago. Before this year concludes, I promise to sort my makeup and skin care products, and toss the old and unusable ones away.

(For a quick guide on makeup expiration, click here.)

3.       Try a new trend every month.

With all the hot new colors coming out this spring, there’s no way I’m playing it safe this year! Some of the trends that I intend to master include colored, geometric eyeliners (emerald green makeup will be big this year, as Pantone’s color of the year and all), bold brows and voluminous lashes, and bloody-red lips (I know it’s not exactly new, but does this ever go out of style?).

(For more Spring 2013 makeup trends, click here.)

4.       Invest in key tools.

With multipurpose products and affordable, professional-quality tools available for every beauty junkie and newbie alike, there’s really no excuse for slacking off on your beauty routine. Here are some key investments I’ve made so far:

Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing System – Three words: money well spent! It’s on the pricey side, but believe me, once you’ve tried this, you’ll never use your fingers to cleanse your face again!

Blowout Beauty Ultra Power Professional Hair Dryer – If I want to keep up with the schedule I’ve listed above, I have to have a power tool like this to make it happen. I tried this hair dryer and it really cut my hair drying time in half. The best thing about this is that the finish is super sleek that I never have to use a flat iron afterwards to tame my wayward strands!

Still on my wish list: TEMPTU Signature Starter Set

5.       Finally, be a little more diligent about my beauty routine.

I’ve been on the nice list for religiously slathering myself with layers of moisturizer and sunblock all year round; however, I do feel that I fell short on hair and nail care. So this year, I promise that no matter how busy life gets, I’ll make it a point to get a trim every 3 months (per hairstylist advice), do weekly deep conditioning treatments, and get a mani/pedi every 3 weeks.

There you have it—my 5 beauty resolutions! Do you have a list of beauty resolutions, too? Go ahead and share it with us!!!

Beauty Survival Kit: What You Need to Pack for…the End of the World

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

OK, so maybe the idea of the end of the world (or an impending zombie apocalypse) is a bit too far-fetched. You can blame that on my recent trip to Peru, where I’ve had an exceptional, first-hand encounter with the brilliance of the Inca culture—a.k.a. one of the three ancient cultures believed to be proponents of the 2012-is-the-end-of-the-world phenomenon. Or it could be the inevitable effect of my growing addiction to TV gore (thanks, Walking Dead!). However, with all the talk about climate change, World War III, and Planet Nibiru colliding with Earth sometime this century, you can never tell when something unthinkable can happen. So, with this in mind, with or without a real Armageddon threat, I’ve put together my own beauty survival kit.

You must think I’m vain. You must think: why does she need beauty products in the event of an emergency of doomsday proportions?? Well, my friend, in case you’re not aware, our skin is our first level of defense against the world at large. It regulates our body temperature and protects our internal organs from bacteria, adverse environments and extreme weather conditions. Not to mention, our skin, hair and even nails are also the best indicators of our overall health. So, as you assemble the practical things that will help you thrive in the event of an apocalyptic episode, make sure to keep these products on hand. Actually, you can use them any time to ensure healthy skin.

1. Let’s start with the basics.  When I think of Armageddon, extreme temperatures come to mind—either there will be too much UV contact or total darkness. Whatever the outcome, it’s only prudent to arm yourself with a powerful sunblock and a time-tested moisturizer. If you can find one product that does both jobs well—like La Roche-Posay Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizing Cream with Sunscreen—the better! A lip moisturizer with SPF is also a must-have.

2. I don’t need to tell you that in the event of a power outage, hot water—or maybe even water itself—will not be available for your bathing pleasure. Don’t worry, there are other ways to keep yourself clean and fresh in between showers, like anti-bacterial hand sanitizers, on-the-go cleansing wipes, facial and body mists and dry shampoos. You’ll also find these products extremely useful, especially if you find yourself taking refuge in the jungle. I should know, I always bring these products with me whenever I go on camping and hiking trips.

3. As serene as nature can be, unfortunately, you would have to share the rest of the jungle with our cute little crawlers, blood-sucking fliers and poisonous plants. This is where insect repellents and itch-control creams can come in handy. If you have room for skin-soothers like aloe vera, thermal spring waters (a godsend!), and cooling creams, feel free to throw them in the pack as well.

4. Finally, you know those hypothetical questions they usually ask, like what is that one makeup product you’d want to have with you when stranded on a desert or a secluded tropical island? If you don’t have an answer to that yet, you better start thinking of one as early as now. As for me, the only makeup product I brought with me during my crazy Peruvian expedition was my jane iredale Dream Tint SPF 15 Moisture Tint. It’s a moisturizer and sunblock in one that offers just the right amount of coverage. So if it worked exceptionally well for me during my bargain-hunting spree in crowded Lima—and my hiking trip to the Andes mountains under the scorching sun—I’m confident it’ll work for me just fine when the dawn of the dead strikes (sorry, I couldn’t resist).

Pack these products along with sufficient water, some canned goods, protective clothing, a flash light, matchsticks, a medical kit and a badass machete and you get better odds at surviving the end of the world. Remember, if the Mayan/Incan calculations are correct, you only have approximately 18 days to pack your survival kit…and make each moment of your life count. Good luck!

Cattiva Divino Lash Mascara

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Mascara is serious business.  There are days when I don’t feel like putting on a full face of makeup, but I can’t leave the house without a little bit of bronzer and A LOT of Mascara. Because I take mascara so seriously, I’ve tried a lot of different brands. And I have to admit, I’ve become quite picky.

I want mascara that separates my lashes but doesn’t clump. You always want your lashes to look luscious and full. And you need the right mascara to do it. That’s when I found Cattiva Divino Lash Mascara.

Divino Lash Mascara has plenty of pigment! Even with two coats I get so much volume. It lasts all day and it doesn’t clump. Divino Lash is paraben-free and smudge proof. It separates your lashes making them appear longer. Formulated with cutting edge technology Divino Lash Mascara uses its formula to wrap, thicken and condition your lashes all day, giving them a fuller effect.

I also love pretty glittery things. Have you seen the crystal-studded cap?! It is gorgeous! I really don’t feel this picture does this sparkling container any justice. But trust me, it its super cute and you can take it with you on the run. This rich black formula is easy to remove with eye makeup remover, also a huge plus. The best way to apply it is to wipe off any access product on the sides of the mascara wand before you apply. Start at the base of the lashes and wiggle mascara up and out. For added fullness apply a second coat.

Easy Application: 3 Wearable Fall 2012 Makeup Trends To Try Right Now

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

By Jenna

As we’re seeing gorgeous models walk the runways for uber famous designers for next spring at New York Fashion Week, I thought we’d slow it down a bit and talk about the best makeup color trends for fall 2012. I don’t mean the super crazy fall 2012 makeup trends that we’ll never want to wear, but the simple, easy-to-do and you may even already have it in your makeup bag trends that will spice up your fall life.

First up are cobalt blue lashes. As a lash lover, I am so excited for this trend I’ve already ordered 2 different mascaras for it. Just a couple coats of blue mascara can complement any natural look for an understated-chic pop of color. Major lashes are always in, but adding a hint of blue will bring out your eye color and show off your trend-savvy side.  Blue isn’t just for your grandma anymore.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2012 - Michael Kors

Bringing on the drama is usually saved for a dramatic holiday or new year event, but vampy lips are definitely back. A soft, natural face with a dramatic red lip is the perfect combination for your newly bought leather leggings. Going almost goth, opt for a darker red this season over the traditional Marilyn red. If you’re in the medium skin tone range, try something like Jane Iredale’s Just Kissed Lip Plumper in Venice for a red that is versatile and on trend. It has just the right amount of plump, yet it glides on smoothly while helping your lip health. For anyone with very light skin tones or very dark skin tones, you can go full on drama queen and try out the darker plum lipsticks. Just be sure to not over-do your eye makeup on this one, otherwise the look could look overdone and backfire. You’re going for an elegantly edgy look, not a slutty one.

Call it a preview into winter, but frostbitten cheeks are so in and it’s something you can achieve with what you already have in your makeup bag.  Just take a very pretty pink or rose and sweep it right across your cheek bones, while blending out the edges and you’re done. It’s perfect with a natural face or with subtle-smoked out eye. This weathered look can be worn to work or on a date night and will take you all of about 2 minutes.

See? 3 very simple, yet classic ways to show off your pretty face on just a normal day. Which one of these do you plan on trying

Murad Hybrids: Skin Care Meets Makeup

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

When I think about Murad, the word “makeup” isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind.  I’d think “anti-aging” or “acne solution” or “comprehensive skin care regimen.” So when I heard about Murad’s Hybrid line, Murad’s ambitious attempt to combine skin care and makeup into one product, I was definitely curious.

The strength of Murad Hybrids lies in its ability to conceal imperfections and even skin tone while improving the skin’s health over time. That sounded too good to be true at first, but then I read so many rave reviews in several publications about two of its products—Skin Perfecting Primer Matte Finish and Eye Lift Perfector—so I decided to try them!

I’m very particular about using primer, not only because it acts as a barrier between my skin and the chemical compositions of my other makeup products, but also because of the slew of benefits it provides like balancing oil production, filling in lines and pores, evening out skin tone, and holding my makeup in place throughout the day. Sometimes, it’s all the makeup I use.

As a primer, Murad’s Skin Perfecting Primer – Matte Finish does its job so well! It’s refreshingly cool on my dry skin, hydrating it while delivering skin-nourishing ingredients that would eventually refine the texture of my skin and shrink my enlarged pores. When it dries up, I get a smooth and shine-free finish that’s ready for makeup. What’s more, this product comes in one, universal shade, so it takes the guesswork out of finding the right primer that matches your skin tone and type. And because it’s oil-free, it doesn’t clog my pores and cause breakouts.

Murad’s Eye Lift Perfector is another wonder product, and it perfectly complements the Skin Perfecting Primer. It has a light, sparkly tint that not just conceals dark circles and discoloration, but also brightens my eye area and makes me look more awake. As a bonus, it features an advanced formula that hydrates, smoothes, firms and nourishes the skin, providing long-term solutions to skin issues under the eyes.

Overall, I’m very happy with my new discoveries. Using products that act both as a treatment and makeup don’t just save me money and application time, it also reduces my skin’s exposure to potentially toxic ingredients that come with applying too many skin care and makeup products.
