Off The Beaten Path with ARCONA’s Cranberry Toner

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

By Jenna

To me toners aren’t normally considered to be facial cleansers.  Generally you use your toner after you exfoliate and before you moisturize, but ARCONA’s Cranberry Toner is breaking down barriers. This product is a multi-active cleansing superstar and is suitable for any skin type. Thanks to an alluring shimmer in the bottle and a heavenly cranberry scent, you’ll be head over heels for ARCONA after using this fabulous product. Here’s why you should take a break from your generic routine and indulge a little off the beaten cleanser path.

This skin toner helps infuse skin with antioxidants that help leave skin smooth and protect from free radical damage. Don’t be shocked when you don’t find a spray pump with this one; it’s a cleanser, toner and moisturizer all in one convenient little bottle, so while helping to hydrate your skin it’s also clearing away unwanted dirt, makeup and debris from your pores. The first thing that I noticed upon using this facial toner was how great it smells. It has a very fruity, warm scent yet it’s light enough not to overpower your senses. It’s actually really refreshing to have a toning cleanser that doesn’t smell like a hospital bed.

ARCONA’s Cranberry Toner is slightly foaming and has a thicker consistency than a regular spray toner. After application, you’ll notice your skin smoother and definitely more moisturized than before. Coming from a cult favorite brand like ARCONA, you can put this product on a higher holistic scale than most. The line was created by a prolific woman who was both a chemist and a holistic skin care pioneer that has gained quite a following over twenty years. ARCONA caters to anyone who doesn’t want to go under the knife but wants plastic surgery worthy results with a motto that anyone of any age can and should have amazing looking skin.

Did you get this awesome product in the latest season’s kit?

Murad Hybrids: Skin Care Meets Makeup

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

When I think about Murad, the word “makeup” isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind.  I’d think “anti-aging” or “acne solution” or “comprehensive skin care regimen.” So when I heard about Murad’s Hybrid line, Murad’s ambitious attempt to combine skin care and makeup into one product, I was definitely curious.

The strength of Murad Hybrids lies in its ability to conceal imperfections and even skin tone while improving the skin’s health over time. That sounded too good to be true at first, but then I read so many rave reviews in several publications about two of its products—Skin Perfecting Primer Matte Finish and Eye Lift Perfector—so I decided to try them!

I’m very particular about using primer, not only because it acts as a barrier between my skin and the chemical compositions of my other makeup products, but also because of the slew of benefits it provides like balancing oil production, filling in lines and pores, evening out skin tone, and holding my makeup in place throughout the day. Sometimes, it’s all the makeup I use.

As a primer, Murad’s Skin Perfecting Primer – Matte Finish does its job so well! It’s refreshingly cool on my dry skin, hydrating it while delivering skin-nourishing ingredients that would eventually refine the texture of my skin and shrink my enlarged pores. When it dries up, I get a smooth and shine-free finish that’s ready for makeup. What’s more, this product comes in one, universal shade, so it takes the guesswork out of finding the right primer that matches your skin tone and type. And because it’s oil-free, it doesn’t clog my pores and cause breakouts.

Murad’s Eye Lift Perfector is another wonder product, and it perfectly complements the Skin Perfecting Primer. It has a light, sparkly tint that not just conceals dark circles and discoloration, but also brightens my eye area and makes me look more awake. As a bonus, it features an advanced formula that hydrates, smoothes, firms and nourishes the skin, providing long-term solutions to skin issues under the eyes.

Overall, I’m very happy with my new discoveries. Using products that act both as a treatment and makeup don’t just save me money and application time, it also reduces my skin’s exposure to potentially toxic ingredients that come with applying too many skin care and makeup products.

In ‘Defense’ of Awesome Skin

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

If you’ve read many of my posts and articles, you know I’m a huge fan of antioxidant skin care. And really, anyone who knows anything about anti-aging skin care is obsessed with antioxidants. Why? So many reasons! In addition to correcting existing skin damage like wrinkles, fine lines, rough texture and dark spots, antioxidants give our skin a fighting chance at maintaining its youthfulness. How? Well, they work to ward off the rampant free radical damage that’s pretty much inevitable in today’s world. (If you live in a big city, you definitely know what I’m talking about!) Even better, antioxidants may help to bolster the efficacy of your SPF. Which you ARE using religiously every day … right?

Anyway. My latest Beautyfix obsession is one of the industry’s best and most advanced antioxidant skin care products. It contains a slew of skin-saving vitamins in addition to ultra moisturizing ingredients like sweet almond oil and aloe barbadensis leaf juice to give your skin care routine the kick it needs to, well, improve your skin. CellCeuticals Extreme Defense Anti-Cell Damage Skin Treatment has, in the month or so I’ve been using it, made a marked improvement on my skin. For instance, I’m struggling with a stubborn dark spot on the right side of my nose. While it definitely hasn’t disappeared completely (I’m gonna need to get a heavy-duty chemical peel to get rid of it, and summer time is NOT the right time for this kind of thing, my friends) it’s lightened considerably. For that reason alone I’d recommend this awesome product!

Did you select CellCeuticals Extreme Defense Anti-Cell Damage Skin Treatment as part of your Beautyfix kit this season? How’s it workin’ out for ya?

Phytomer Hydracontinue Moisturizing Body Milk

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

I’m always looking for new products that will keep my skin moisturized. During the summer months I am always outside and in water. This dries my skin out and I am constantly moisturizing same thing goes in the fall/winter with the cooler weather I experience dry skin.  Recently I discovered Phytomer HydraContinue Moisturizing Body Milk.

This amazing formula helped my skin retain moisture and softness. With dry skin I’ve found that the most effective formulas are thick and greasy, this body milk proved me wrong.  I’m not a fan of heavy moisturizers, so when I tried this light weight product out and found it to be effective, I was very pleased.  This fascinating milky formula gives a long-lasting barely-there feel. Phytomer products are enriched with natural marine extracts; this helps the product penetrate the skin while still staying soft.  I also like the scent it is very light and clean.

This moisturizer makes my skin soft all day. Soybean, corn oils and sunflower revitalize and nourish your skin while Shea Butter repairs and renews your skin helping improve its elasticity. This moisturizing body milk is enriched with Pheohydrane a 100% natural active ingredient.  I apply this moisturizer daily after showering, I make sure to massage it into my skin until it is completely absorbed. I’m obsessed with moisturizers and this is one of the best I’ve purchased. It leaves my skin silky and smooth for hours. I also like the design of the bottle, it fits the product perfectly.  My skin has improved immensely with continuous use of this amazing product. This is a must have for your daily skin routine.

Summer Kiss with jane iredale

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

Summer makeup is all about looking natural, especially if you’re planning to spend most of summer lounging by the beach. The same rule applies with summer lips.

I usually try to steer clear of makeup during warmer months, lipstick especially, because I get dehydrated easily and that shows on my dry, chapped lips. Usually I’d go for a medicated lip balm—or if I need some color when I go out at night, a medicated lip balm with a hint of tint. Yes, that’s all the makeup my lips would usually get.

That is until I tried jane iredale’s Just Kissed Lip Plumper in Milan. The first thing I loved about this lip color is its shade—a natural-looking, nude pink shade. Its sheer color is so summery; it looks effortlessly pretty. It’s perfect if you want to wear a little bit of color without looking too made up.

I also like that this creamy formula glides smoothly on my lips—it’s buttery, but not sticky. Plus, its gorgeous, light-catching shimmer stays on for the most part of the day, whether at work or play. But more than that, I also find that minty feel (as well as that slight tingling sensation) so refreshing on my lips. It’s almost like that fresh, clean feeling you get when you just brushed your teeth.

Of course, I must admit that I have some biases when it comes to jane iredale products. I did my research before I picked this product. I already know that jane iredale’s entire makeup line comes from naturally derived ingredients, with no harmful ingredients like talc, perfume, alcohol, dyes or anything that can harm my skin.

True enough, this lip color is enriched with vitamins so your lips would feel as good as they look. It features natural oils from shea butter, sunflower and aloe vera to soften and moisturize your lips; lemon and tangerine oils to exfoliate dead skin cells; and unique time-released peptides to encourage healthy collagen production. And as if that’s not enough, it features ginger root extract, as well as spearmint and peppermint to oils, to stimulate blood circulation and plump your lips naturally. Whew! That’s a slew of benefits from a lipstick!

Honestly, when I got this lipstick, I wasn’t looking for something to plump my lips. All I needed was a lip enhancer that could moisturize and give it a slight hint of color. But with this product, I got those and so much more! I got smooth, healthy, plump and soft lips! This is definitely going to be one of my beach-bag staples.

Beautyfix 15: A Slew of NEW!

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

WOW! The new season of Beautyfix starts tomorrow—June 15—and as a member of the panel I can tell you how AMAZING this season’s selection of top beauty products is. Dare I say it’s my favorite season yet? There are new picks in just about every category you can think of! From face makeup to high-performance anti-aging skin care to must-have hair care products and nearly everything in between, Beautyfix is bound to make you fall in love this summer. Maybe even several times!

With so many top beauty products from which to choose this season, I found it pretty tough to pick a favorite. But I have to say I’ve found a new obsession in Eminence Coconut Firming Body Lotion—which, by the way, is full-size. (Score!) What makes this one so amazing? Well, it’s from Eminence, for starters. If you didn’t know, pretty much everything that brand makes is utterly fantastic! But really, as far as body lotions go, this one’s a winner for a few reasons:

1. It’s got a yummy but not too in-your-face scent. Doesn’t the smell of fresh coconut appeal to your senses all year round?
2. It’s made with awesome natural ingredients. Take a look at the list—the first one’s coconut water.
3. It’s infused with Eminence’s signature blend of antioxidants AND their Natural Retinol Alternative Complex. How many body lotions do you know of that offer those kind of benefits? And they work. After just a couple of weeks I notice an improvement in the texture of my skin.
4. It’s got a great texture: rich but not heavy, and silky, not sticky.

Suffice it to say, I’ve been using this gem every day and am just about done with the bottle. I’ve already decided I’ll be purchasing several more so that I’ve always got it on hand! Yes, it’s that good.

Here’s a complete list of the top beauty products that make up this season of Beautyfix. What are YOU most excited to try this time around?

Hope for Ho-Hum Hair

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Hair can make or break a look—that’s coming from a girl who has always been plagued with limp, lifeless hair: ME. I used to think that the problem was not having the best hairstyle for my face shape. But then, after trying just about every possible hairstyle—long, shoulder-length, pixie, bob, layered and shaggy—the limp look lingered. So on days I couldn’t spare an extra 10 minutes to blow dry my hair, I’d just tie the whole thing up in a messy pony or bun to add volume to hair and simulate a textured look. Most of the time, my hair would just look, well, messy, as if I was wearing a bird’s nest as a hat. But this was before I came across Nick Chavez Amazon Hair Body Building Styling Clay.

I’ve always been impressed with Nick Chavez’s hair products, not only because he had a pretty colorful history. (I mean, who would have thought that grooming his family’s horses would eventually make him one of the most sought-after hairstylists in Beverly Hills?) But more than that, I like that his products are very gentle to my sensitive scalp, like his Volumizing Shampoo. Regular shampoos tend to make my scalp itch uncontrollably, but that shampoo doesn’t. Plus, this shampoo contains a powerful blend of protein- and vitamin-rich botanicals to strengthen and thicken my ultra-fine and color-treated hair.

If your hair is like mine, the best limp hair advice I can give you is to use Nick’s Amazon Hair Body Building Styling Clay together with Nick’s Volumizing Shampoo. This hair clay is so easy to use. After I towel-dry my hair, I blow-dry just the roots of my hair. Then, I take a pea-sized amount of the clay, rub it between my hands, and then rub my hands all over the roots. The result is almost immediate. Once the rest of my hair has been air-dried, I get is a nice round plump shape that frames my head—and it stays that way all day long! And since this product is highly concentrated, I don’t use up that much product, which means I’ll probably hold on to the tube I have for a really long time.

Of course, I’m still on the lookout for that one defining haircut—the same defining hair moment that catapulted Jennifer Anniston’s layered locks into instant stardom. Maybe one day I’ll meet a genius hairstylist who will pave the way for that. But for now, I’ll let Nick Chavez’s hair clay work its magic on my stubborn head of hair.

Face CoTZ Natural Skin Tone SPF 40

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

Spring is here and summer is on its way. As the weather get warmer and you start to spend more time basking in the sun’s rays, it’s time to think about how you’re going to  protect your skin. Protect your skin with Face CoTZ  Natural Skin Tone SPF 40.

I have very sensitive skin and I always have to be careful with any products that I use, especially on my face. This product gives physical protection without chemical sunscreens, parabens, PABA or dyes. Cotz uses proprietary technology, featuring multiple particle sizes of micronized titanium and zinc, which make the formula so silky. It also helps it give great photoprotective performance while helping to prevent pre-mature skin aging and correct uneven skin tone. This non-greasy formula leaves your skin soft and smooth but not shiny. Even better, COTZ doesn’t block my pores or make me sweat. It just rubs in and protects my skin from the sun. And it’s so light, I can wear it under my makeup. Just rub a small amount into your skin and it disappears almost instantly!

This small tube goes a long way and it fits perfectly in your purse or pocket.  CoTZ helps prevent and reduce the damaging effects of the sun’s Ultraviolet light. It offers sheer elegant protection. You can apply this sun protection before you go outside. Rub it in until it fades and re apply every 2-3 hours for maximum protection.

Beautyfix Spotlight: Alpha Hydrox AHA Souffle Soothing Anti-Wrinkle Cream

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Exfoliating the skin is one of the most important things you can do to even out skin tone and achieve a healthy, glowing complexion. As we age, our skin’s natural ability to generate and shed skin cells slows down, but regular exfoliation can help to overcome this challenge.

There are two types of exfoliants to consider, chemical and manual. A chemical or acid exfoliant does the work for you as opposed to a manual exfoliant such as using a brush, sponge or facial scrub, however the combination of both will give your skin the best results. Manual exfoliation should be done on a regular basis (once or twice/week), and the chemical exfoliations should be reserved for more intermittent use. If you do go the chemical route, choose a product that contains alpha or beta hydroxyl acids for deeper exfoliation, such as Alpha Hydrox, AHA Souffle Soothing Anti-Wrinkle Cream.

This velvety, textured cream contains 12% Glycolic AHA which provides a deep exfoliation and helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, crows feet, smile lines and forehead creases (no need to cut bangs just yet). Simply apply, leave it on and it works by itself to dissolve dry, flaky skin. Peptides work to plump up the skin and Green Tea antioxidants help fight against premature aging, leaving you with an even, smooth, healthy complexion. The best part is the price is right! This is very affordable making it a great item to incorporate into your skin care routine.

The frequency of exfoliation will vary for every individual pending on skin type, seasons, environmental factors, etc. Over exfoliation can cause your skin to be dry, irritated and damaged so be sure to consult with an Esthetician or Dermatologist to see what exfoliating method/routine would work best for you.

Oh and lastly, since you are basically exposing fresh ‘baby’ skin when you exfoliate regularly be sure not to skimp on the sunscreen. Be safe and take care of your fresh, new skin!

Not Your Average Energy Drink- EBOOST

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

I stay on the go and I’m always looking for a quick boost of energy. I need extra energy without the crash. I tried EBOOST Orange Natural Energy Packets and fell in deep like!  This easy to mix powder packet is formulated with the good stuff like Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Vitamin B-12. It helps boost your mood, focus and immunity but most importantly it doesn’t make you crash after a few hours.

I like the citrus taste of orange and the natural sources of caffeine. This powder packet is awesome for hangovers and an excellent cure for a cold. The small square packets are similar to the size of a tea bag making them easy to pack in your purse, away in your desk or your gym bag. The citrus taste is not too tart or tangy which I enjoy. I like that it dissolves quick and easy in water, gives you energy but doesn’t leave you jittery like a lot of other energy drinks do.

The boost is subtle but lasting which is great for a work day, no crash city over here! I try to drink EBOOST in place of coffee. And for those watching their figure, EBOOST is only 5 calories and contains no sugar. There are plenty of nasty viruses going around this time of year; EBOOST helps build my immune system. EBOOST also contains niacin, zinc, copper and potassium.

Like I told you earlier it’s not your average energy drink! I like that there was no extreme boost, I was steadily active and alert. Instead of sucralose, EBOOST uses Stevia leaf extract, the only 100% natural and calorie-free sweetener on the market right now. Gotta love it! Gotta try it.
