A Non-Political Post About The White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Between Lindsey’s missed flight and George’s Keibler-less arm, the blogosphere’s STILL buzzing about the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which, as you’re no doubt aware, took place on Saturday. Around these parts, we abstain from political banter. So let’s get down to business and discuss the most exciting part of the evening: what the attendees looked like on the red carpet.

Elizabeth Banks

I’m a sucker for the perfect red dress, and the one Elizabeth Banks chose is exactly that. The color is amazing and the cut is pure elegance. Winner!

Lindsay Lohan

That red hair? SUCH an improvement over that horrid Barbie blonde. But the dress? Ick! Looks like something sewn by a pageant mom from a pattern … and not with exceptional skill or attention to detail. This thing belongs on an unfortunate bridesmaid holding fire-and-ice roses at a winter wedding. It doesn’t have a place at an A-list event. (Yeah, neither did some of the guests. What are you gonna do?)

Dakota Fanning

Doesn’t that pale grey-blue against the golden blonde locks remind you of Cinderella? One of my favorite looks of the evening for sure. This dress is gorgeous and so is Dakota.

Charlize Theron

Without a doubt, she’s one of the most stunning women of our generation. But this isn’t my favorite Charlize. Is it just me, or does she look washed out? I love the lace getup but wish she had more color on her face. A bright lip would have been nice and on-trend. Oh well.

Viola Davis

Another gorgeous red dress! I love this entire look. It’s subtly sexy, yet polished at the same time.

Spring Cleaning Time: Tips From a Makeup Artist

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

Spring is here! Which means spring cleaning. As a Makeup Artist, that means going through my kit and performing what I like to call, “The Sift and Ditch”. I go through each and every product, checking how old it is, giving it the smell test and tossing anything that has expired.  How do you know it’s time to ditch your old products? Here is the basic breakdown of how long you should hold on to makeup in your bag:

Foundation- 1 Year
Facial Moisturizer with SPF- Check the bottle for expiration date
Any powder products (Face Powder, Blush, Shadow, Bronzers, etc.)- 2-3 Years
Lipstick, Gloss, Lipliner- 1 Year
Cream Shadows and Eye Primers- 1-2 Years
Eye Pencils- 1-2 Years
MASCARA- 3 Months, Tops!

I also suggest washing your makeup brushes. (When’s the last time you did?!) If you can’t remember how long ago it was, it’s time. What to use to clean with? For natural bristle brushes I love the Beauty Blender Cleanser diluted with some water, and for synthetic bristle brushes (concealer, lip, cream liner) use dish soap. Yes, dish soap, it’s the only thing that truly gets those brushes residue free. After gently squeezing out the excess water, reshape the brush and lay flat to dry on a towel. To increase the life of your tools, I suggest washing them at least every two weeks. Also, inspect the condition of your brushes, get rid of any misshapen or frayed brushes.

A couple more tips on keeping your cosmetics clean and bacteria free:

-If your makeup bag is machine washable, turn it inside out and give it a spin.
-Clean any tools such a tweezers, scissors or lash curlers.
-Sharpen your eye and lip pencils before use.
-Give all your products a smell to make sure there’s no funky odor. If there is, toss!

Now is the perfect time to replace any old products with some new spring goodies, happy cleaning!

It’s D.E.A.R Day!

In case you didn’t know, April is more than just Rosacea Awareness month, it’s also a party month!  Aside from the mainstream holidays such as Passover, Easter and (I guess April Fools’ Day), there are also quite a few less-traditional opportunities to celebrate.

Yes, today is my birthday, but enough about me, today is also D.E.A.R day as in Drop Everything And Read. For those of you that are not familiar with this day, it encourages you to abandon all prior commitments for the comfort of a good book (or in this case, a good blog), but I digress…

To celebrate this special day, I have taken it upon myself to gather up a few informative beauty resources that you can take some time to read (just in case you are not in the mood for a long book).

  • This very informative Women’s Day article rounds up the 8 best restorative skin care ingredients to apply before bed.  This includes some great advice from Dr. Ashley Magovern, MD, a board-certified dermatologist for DermStore.

  • The DermStore Skin Resource center has a plethora of skin care articles/information. This is a great place to find information on a wide variety of skin care and makeup topics. It is a good way to keep you busy on this not so traditional holiday.

  • The DermStore blog is a great place to read about beauty trends, skin care issues/concerns, makeup application tips/tricks, etc. from none other than the DermStore Staff. Not to mention they do giveaways quite often so you have a chance to win some goodies and bring some additional excitement to this holiday.

That should help get you started with celebrating this special day. Who knows…you may discover some mind blowing information that will change your life.  If you’re reading this sentence then you are already off to a good start!

You know what to do next (D.E.A.R)
